House approves $400,000 for Ritz Theater restoration

WASHINGTON – The Ritz Theater on Broadway in the City of Newburgh is going to be restored with a $400,000 grant secured by Congressman Maurice Hinchey.

The funds are part of the fiscal year 2010 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill, which must now be addressed in a Senate version.

The renovation will create a home for performance groups, create an improved venue for live shows, and provide job training and employment opportunities.

The theater is part of the Hotel Newburgh complex. That is now Safe Harbors of the Hudson.

The Ritz Theater originally opened its doors on February 13, 1913 as the Cohen Opera House. Nearly every major star of that era played the stage including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
