Subject: the chickens have come home to roost.

"Men lie, women lie, but those numbers dont lie"- Mayor Torrance Harvey.

This time i agree with you Harvey. As in the number one. As in one Miss Debbie. One Miss Debra Benedict.

Let's explore some more numbers. Would this tragedy have occurred if 10 firefighters arrived one the scene that night, instead of 7? Would Miss Debbie be here today if three fire apparatus were on the scene initally, instead of two? Would the 1.5 to 2 minute delay in getting water on the fire because the fire engine with the water had to come from upper broadway, (instead of 22 grand st) made any difference?

Difficult numbers, Mr. Harvey and Mr. Venning. Difficult numbers indeed.

Woman killed in overnight Newburgh fire; son in critical condition
Jun 16, 2022,
By: News 12 Staff

An overnight three-alarm fire engulfed a multifamily home in Newburgh, leaving a mother dead and her son in critical condition.
The fire began Wednesday just before 11 p.m. in one of the units at 68 Lander St.
The flames quickly spread to the row-style homes on either side, forcing everyone out. Living on the top floor was a woman neighbors describe as being in her mid-60s and known in the neighborhood as a kind lady they all call Miss Debbie.
Debra Benedict lived with her adult son, Jason. The two became trapped by the heavy smoke and flames. He was forced to jump, left dazed and critically injured by the fall.

She was stuck. Neighbors watched in horror as she hung out the window calling for help before becoming engulfed by the flames.

"It messes you up mentally to see somebody sitting in the window like this and just burning,” says Tiffany Williams.
The stairs inside had burned away, so no one could reach her.
Several families are now left homeless, but they're grateful to be alive. Several family pets also perished in the fire.
"We lost everything just about too, but we're still here thank God, we're still here,” says Ernest Grady.
Red Cross is helping the victims.
Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey released a statement on the fire, saying, “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family that lost their loved ones. This fire is still under investigation. We thank our brave men and women who are first responders. They did an outstanding job last night.”
There is no word yet on a cause of the fire.

Deadly fire renews concerns about cuts to Newburgh Fire Department, code enforcement
Jun 16, 2022,
By: Blaise Gomez

A deadly overnight fire in the City of Newburgh is raising concerns from residents about building code enforcement and the fire department’s response.
A News 12 source says the fire at 68 Lander St. started as a stove fire that quickly spread through the building and that there were several contributing factors in the deadly fire.

Residents say the third-floor stairwell was engulfed in flames, trapping the victim and her son inside.
The victim, identified by neighbors as Debra Benedict, was overpowered by smoke and flames while trying to jump from a third-story window.

Her adult son, Jason Benedict, suffered serious injuries after jumping from the burning building and remains hospitalized.

They say the building does not have a fire escape or sprinklers and allege there were no fire extinguishers inside.
Residents say the multifamily building did not have fire alarms.
A city fire official tells News 12 anonymously that the fire report indicates smoke detectors were present.
It's not clear whether they were in working order.
They say fire extinguishers and a fire escape are not required under local building codes.
The fire department‘s ability to respond is in question by residents and the community on social media.
The city voted earlier this year to lower the minimum firefighters on duty from 10 people to seven.
News 12 is told that the cuts caused the firefighters who did respond to come from a firehouse farther away, on Broadway, instead of their closer location on Grand Street.
Former City of Newburgh Fire Chief Mike Vatter says the tragedy, under the current staffing levels, was sadly inevitable.
"When you pull up and there’s not enough people to do all the jobs that need to be done right away it becomes an impossible task," said Vatter.
Wednesday’s fire is the first fatal fire since the city reduced the number of firefighters on duty in January.
News 12 is told that 16 fire departments from surrounding areas were called in for mutual aid.
News 12 has calls out to city officials and the building landlord for comment but haven’t heard back.
