Quite a council meeting Monday night. As Chief Spinelli allegedly told Councilman Grice, “Let the cooler heads prevail”. There were too many hot heads on both sides of the table Monday night.

One observation from the meeting. Mayor Harvey said that he has the signatures of 500 single mothers who have “volunteered” their children ages 18 to 25 to serve as volunteer firefighters with the prospect of eventually becoming paid city firefighters.. That means 500 - 1000+ may be willing to serve as firefighters. At the same time, Councilman Shakur is complaining that most of the firefighters don’t live in the city.

What am I missing here? If Mayor Harvey has such a list he should turn it over to Councilman Shakur, who in turn can speak with the 500 to 1000+ prospective firefighters and encourage them to apply for the Civil service exam for firefighter. If they did, some would ultimately be hired as firefighters, thus improving the percentage of firefighters who are city residents. Voila.

Perhaps Blaise Gomez or Alberto Gilman, or some other media employees could question the mayor and
Councilman Shakur and ask them why they are not working with each other to make this a realit.
