Newburgh Mayor says its "unfair" residents criticize the wasteful spending of $61,900 for the entire Newburgh board to spend a weekend at the Mohonk Mountain House with a consultant group rather than using that money to fill EVERY POTHOLE IN NEWBURGH.

Late criticism of spending $37,000 for weekend retreat “unfair” says mayor - Mid Hudson News

NEWBURGH – Mayor Torrance Harvey told Wednesday’s night’s session of the city council that while the $37,000 professional retreat for the city council last weekend was extremely educational, the late day criticism by some in the community was inappropriate. Mayor Torrance Harvey did acknowledge the council would do it differently in the future instead of traveling to the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz at a cost of $900 per single occupancy rooms and meal costs.

“We made it known months and months in advance what we were going to be doing with this retreat and the cost, and it’s unfair for people to criticize us after we already had public hearings and meetings and had been transparent about those things,” he said. “We definitely will do it differently next time, but it’s not fair to wait until a week before we go to our training to start criticizing us.”

The retreat and its location were approved just one month prior to it being held and the entire council voted for it without discussion. There were no public hearings about it before the vote.

One councilwoman, Ramona Monteverde, said days before the retreat that had she given more thought to it, she would have voted against it.

The $37,000 expense was in addition to the $24,900 cost of a consulting firm to conduct several sessions concerning operation of city government.

That this patently outrageous expenditure even made it on to a City Council agenda makes it clear that the City cannot be trusted to make sound financial decisions, nor be responsible stewards of public money.

K.... B. Having oversight of public money is an awesome responsibility not to be taken lightly. I don't recall the cost and details of this excursion EVER being discussed. The mayor is trying to defend the indefensible.

“We made it known months and months in advance what we were going to be doing with this retreat and the cost, and it’s unfair for people to criticize us after we already had public hearings and meetings and had been transparent about those things,”--Torrance Harvey.
"The City Council on Monday, March 11 unanimously approved an agreement with Mohonk Mountain House to host the City Council Workshop. The city council is planning a governance and team building workshop to be held from April 19 to April 21.
City Human Resources Director Audra Cox presented the item at the city work session on March 7 with no comments made by council members"----Mid-Hudson times
That doesn't seem like "months and months in advance". That seems like last month. In addition, people have been criticizing this vacation since March.

He is full of crap. People have been furious about this ever since information about it was released. And rightfully so.
This is a luxury purchase that Newburgh should never have considered in the first place. What's next - a spa trip to Canyon Ranch on the taxpayers dime?

Baloney. The criticism isn’t late. Btw there would not be any criticism at all if such an outrageously ridiculous plan for such a retreat hadn’t been made in the first place. I am still in such shock - I have supported these folks, and now to see that would do this - use these taxpayer funds for such an indulgent “retreat” while so many on their city suffer from poverty, homelessness, unable to meet even basic needs - it is just sickening
