I *loved* Patricia Neal. She was a great example of a "hard loving and hard worn" Appalacian woman. When I was a child watching the series, I really didn't like her as well...but now as an adult living in Appalacia, I see so well how good her character was. Yes, she was older and probably would not have been suitable for as long as the series ran, but I felt Michael Learned looked too young to have such older kids...but that's Hollywood!
