David would have taken Mary Ellen far away from Curt, so the temptation would have been removed. No affair, nada, nuttin. The spark would have then died. --David would not have set up practice on the mountain since Curt was there. Mary Ellen and he would have gone to Charlottsville and thrived there. After Curt left, THEN David would have come to the rescue of the abandoned mountain folk, there he and Mary Ellen would have successfully doctored and cured every single sick person. David had the magic touch ya see. He would still be on the mountain today, where he lived out his life, retired there and never ABANDONED Mary Ellen, unlike ole stubborn Curt. lol
