... Male walked placidly along glancing over at Shade of Winter and her filla. He smiled slightly to himself and glanced at the flame hued stud walking beside him. Spirit whickered in excitment to the herd but remained where he was, he'd already had problems with a stallion and his herd and wasn't quite ready to just run headlong after a mare. Drew was in charge this time. Spirit had no tack, not even a halter or rope. He was a tall lithe four year old Arabian who had been born and even raised wild. In the winter of his thrid year he'd been attacked by and older, stronger stud who'd left him to die and taken his small band of two mares and killed his only filly. Drew had been living in the same mountains as Spirit at the time and stumbled upong the beaten and ill equine. Spirit had fought but had no strength so Drew took him to his small cabin and nursed the equine back to health. He turned him loose in the summer but Spirit was indebted to Drew and could not leave him. So he remained with the male, bonding closer to Drew than any equine, the two becoming like brothers. At their heels trotted a large and handsome grey wolf, another rescued soul. Tracker had been only a pup when Drew had saved him and got on fairly well with others though he was very protective of Drew. He too had a brotherly bond with Drew and was even very close to Spirit though the two fought continueously. Drew paused a moment and glanced at Spirit who'd halted abruptly, staring at Shades of Winter and the little filla. Male let out a gentle whicker ears pricked forwards. The filla had hit a very soft spot in the stallion's heart. She remined him so much of his own daughter who'd been taken from him at such a young age. Drew steadied Spirit with a light hand and smiled. You like her huh? The filla's dam also brought back memories of Spirit's old lead mare. The brute restrained himself from flying to the mare and nuzzling her endlessly. Drew patted the stud and smiled. Well, let's see what they're like first ok? He slowly sat down and Spirit laid down beside him. They were only ten feet off the herd and Drew watched the group silently. He was intergrating himself into their environment, so that they would grow accustom to his presence, be it take several days to accomplish this. Tracker went off to hunt, knowing some horses were afraid of wolves. Spirit again whickered to Shades, hoping to get her attention. He nudged Drew, who gave him a look. We're going to have to be patient pal. You remember what happened when we just jumped into a group of horses last time. Spirit nodded and continued to watch the mare and foal. Drew had nothing with him, no rope, no bag of treats. He only had himself and his big heart for wild beasts, and the bond between him and Spirit. He was content with one horse, but he knew Spirit longed for a mate, someone to share this new life with. Drew intended to get Spirit what he wanted, but he would only do it fairly and would not force a horse to go with him if the animal did not wish to. He was hoping to find an equine of wild birth one similar to Spirit but if that didn't turn out in the end the he would try and purchase a mare for the stud. He could tell Spirit truely liked Shades and would do all he could to get her, but he would not capture her, he would try to befriend her and see if she would take to Spirit. He knew she already had a stud and a family but she could always change her mind. He knew Spirit was a very impressive stud but would a wild mare see through to his free wild heart or would she just look at the human and thing stupid tame horse. Drew would have to wait and find out. He did things differently than most humans, lived out here from time to time in the woods, didn't own a house, prefered to live off the earth, befriended horses and other animals allowing them to live as God intended. Drew was different, whether the horses could see it would be if they wanted to see it. Most horses had had run ins with the worst of mankind. It was no wonder they dispised humans ever after but some could tell when one was different. Maybe Shades could too ...
