Worthy cause,or sucking us dry while GIVING MONEY TO CRONIES? Here is the actual TAX RETURN for the South Jersey Cultual ALLIANCE. I found it at GUIDESTAR. Guidestar has info. on most tax-exempt organizations. This tax return is from 2001. (pdf viewer required)......What KILLS me is the amount of $$ spent on administrative expenses. One full-time admin. at a reasonable salay of about 19 grand,but hiddend in the details, $60,000+ in salaries,with office expenses and other office costs-like the phone bill-totaling over 200,000.,an advertising/marketing expense of over $75,000. For that tax-year,SJCA,took somewhere between 2-$300,000. from the NJ STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS (The council that McGREEVY is cutting ALL funding from the State budget).-and they only "earned" apx. $5,000 through membership fees.

The problem I have with so many arts councils/arts centers is that while they are publicly funded they turn into little fiefdoms with the same people in key positions of authority. I don't like organizations where one clique has a lock on how that organization operates. They ask for money in the form of memberships, but they're rarely willing to accept new ideas, let alone new officers. Most of the more interesting arts events around are those that are not sponsored by these councils, but are sponsored by libraries or businesses (like Borders and coffee houses).
As far as money going to promote the arts - classes in fine and performing arts, regional theatres, festivals - I have two modes of thinking. I do think that the arts should have to become self-supporting, but it does seem that when the local sports teams, or state sports teams need some government aid or a new stadium, I don't hear a lot of protest. The funds just pushed through.

And,RuJane,what bothers me is that,when you look at the funding, MOST of the $$ goes towards administration and salarys and marketing/advertising, while the public STILL has to fork over membership fees and buy expensive tickets for events not to mention the costs associated with taking a class in dance,performance,or art. The entire system needs to be over-hauled in my opinion. If the $$ is available,grants to arts organizations are great, but I don't remember for instance,STATE POET LAUREATE ($10,000),being advertised to the general public.
In one way,I am sorry for the possible demise of art funding with tax dollars, but I think that McGREEVY knows more than he's saying about waste/fraud/croni-isim, involved in the current Arts infrastructure.
Look at the announcement that a LOCAL arts organization took a grant of $140,000,for the purpose of setting-up a website that lists "studio-space" in South Jersey. I would have GLADLY done that website for $5000. wouldn't you? The $140,000 is actually going towards SALARY for teachers who plan on having students do the work. (I would have taught someone how to do it at no extra cost!).
