It has got to a point, where, public funding, and the acquisition of public tax-dollars is an art in itself. Take a look at all of the seminars,meetings,memos,regulations,red-tape... generated in the PURSUIT of NJ tax dollars for arts orginizations.
The people who write the grants, are really writing their own PAYCHECKS!,in many cases. The political patronage that goes along with most industries is alive and well in NJ Arts and maybe just as dirty.
RU-if you and your family are patrons and members of the art community, then you have already contributed a certain amount of your own $$ (and your tax dollars)-towards expensive tickets, memberships, lessons.
Doesn't it bug you that,in addition to that $$,the progam directors, office staff, and vendors (mainly advertising/marketing from what I've seen),are funded by grants? It bothers me!
From the way that I figure it most of the groups affected by cuts, can apply to a different source of funding (SBA,or Federal,or foundation), anyhow.
I looked over the list of groups affected by the cuts, and some of them asked for and recieved very modest amounts of the over-all pie. Some of the groups,I have worked with myself, Some of them use grant money to benefit artists. Some of them use the money to benefit themseves. (ie-paycheck & patronage).
RUJANE-I agree that the arts are extremely important. But should the very exsitence of arts and culture be dependent on the state? And should the $$$ that the state grants towards arts go right into people's pockets while the artists themseves remain (as usual) "starving"?.
