************************************************************Shrine to Catholic saint said to have healing powers

BUENA, N.J. (AP) -- A 6-foot-high statue set in the middle of acres of farmland is drawing hundreds of visitors to this quiet corner of Atlantic County.

Followers say the monument to Padre Pio, the Roman Catholic saint of healing, is responsible for curing cancer, depression, alcoholism and other ailments.

"There are such wonderful stories," Diane Stahl told The Press of Atlantic City. Stahl's family prayed at the shrine after her 18-year-old nephew, Tom, was diagnosed with leukemia. When he returned to the hospital in preparation for a bone-marrow transplant, Stahl said, his leukemia had disappeared.

"That's our miracle," she said. "It's been almost two years now and he is fit and we attribute it to Padre Pio's intervention."

The shrine sits on land owned by Maria Dandrea and her husband, Peter, at the corner of Route 40 and Central Avenue in Landisville, about two miles northeast of Buena.

Before the statue was built, Dandrea remembered, a handful of followers would gather on Wednesdays to recite the rosary at the site. Over time, more people began to attend.

"Curious people would stop by to see what we were doing," she said.

Attendees donated marble and wood for benches, lighting, trash cans, and statues of Jesus and Mary. Today, nearly 300 people visit the site each Wednesday.

Padre Pio was a Capuchin priest who lived at the San Giovanni Rotondo in southern Italy in the early 20th century. He is believed to be the first Roman Catholic priest to bear the stigmata, or the wounds on his hands, feet and side that simulated those suffered by Christ during the crucifixion.

One local resident who believes in the statue's healing power is Det. Sgt. Michael Santiago of the Millville Police Department. Santiago told the newspaper his recovery from an E. coli infection and near-fatal blood disease last year was aided by his prayers to Padre Pio.

"I really believe he pulled me through," Santiago said. "My kidneys were about to shut down and I was in bad shape. It's the prayers that helped me recover."

Please tell me how to get to the statue of Padra Pio. We live in Cherry Hill, NJ and I cannot find Landisville on the NJ map. At least give me a street address and zip code so I can have directions from mapquest.
