Subject: Worse Before Better

I have said this before (and Mark can back me up) that things can only get worse before they get better. Right now we are at the worst. Yes we backed Tom Leighton, BUT he said all along that he would have to make unpopular decisions. Remember we were the ones who pursued the three firefighters per engine but we also heard from our local president "I don't care how many engines they give us, as long as there are three firefighters per". THIS IS NOT ABOUT US, IT IS ABOUT THOSE WE WERE SWORN TO PROTECT !
We as a group are called upon to perform rescues of all kinds or do those jobs that the police don't want or cannot do. Of course we came to the 'rescue' of OUR city with the contract. But,I would like to ask each of our politicians in office in Wilkes-Barre if they know exactly what our job entails. We just don't fight fires, we do everything from nursing assistants to river rescues to saving cats from trees (something that I have done at least three times) to bats in the house, etc. Case in point-Just today a police officer came upon a dmaged utility pole and called the FD to handle it. What, he couldn't call the cable co, or the electric co himself. Then there is the communicable disease thing (bodily fluid pathogens)that we must constantly be on the watch for in performing our duties, and then pray we don't take something home.I don't think the general public know what we actually do throughout a given shift.
All in all, we are scared, scared of change, scared of what might happen with longer response times, scared of what those decision makers who don't know, the Wilkes-Barre fire fighter, will do next.
