He plans a series of socialist ideas, can he afford
them? Clinics in every town. Extension of grants to
underpriviledged youth.

Au contraire, mon ami. Check your facts. He referred to clinics in "rural" towns. You know, those rustbelt outposts miles and miles away from existing hospitals now that consolidation and hospital closings have become the rage. Is that socialism, or an idea that has real merit? Then again, maybe it'll cut into the funding going to the illegal aliens. We wouldn't want that.

Extension of grants? The Pell Grants? Current budget deficits aside, if you want to see this country grow beyond what it is now, offer Pell Grants to every kid that would not otherwise be able to afford a community college. We're talking free college for the poorest kids not content with being poor. That was me 30 years ago. Without the Pell grant, even community college would have been totally beyond my reach at that time. I did not excel in that environment by any stretch of the imagination, but it did provide me with experiences and opportunities that I would have never known otherwise.
Since those days, Pell grants have become hard to come by.

Consider the GI Bill after WWII. An entire generation was offered free college in return for their sacrifice and this country's economic engine has been second to none and then some ever since.

Wanna do away with ghettos? Offer hefty Pell Grants. Wanna do away with trailer parks? All right, let's not get crazy here.

Despite the fact that I squandered what was offered to me, I fully understand that education is the quickest ticket to curing quite a few of our most daunting ills. And I'd rather see our poorer kids head off to a local community college than to one of those expensive indoctrination camps.

Look at it this way. Investing heavily in Pell grants is an investment in the future of our country that can only pay great dividends in the long run. An educated populace is a productive populace. Get it? Productive?

Can he afford them? You tell me.
