Sam looked up, startled by the sound of the dog falling, then cast his book aside and hurried over to the dog on the floor. She clearly hadn't been fed in a long time, he realized, examining the skinny dog, and unless she'd gotten into a fight with another animal, she'd been abused as well. What should he do?

"It's okay," he murmered to the dog, wondering if she'd noticed him. "Christine has some dogs, I'll ask to borrow some of their food. I'll be right back with some help," he said, and quickly left the room.
