A month ago I returned to Isle Royale for the second time this year. I was planning an experiment that I hoped would open up new options for exploring. I was hoping to play with my newest, and potentially among the most interesting, pieces of gear: my Alpacka packraft. For those not familar with this type of boat imagine a white water river raft and now downsize it for a single person. That will get you in the ballpark. Now imagine a person sitting underneath a spraydeck with their gear lashed to the front tube in front of them and a kaayk paddle in their hands. You are getting warmer. Imagine that person being me and you are doing quite well indeed. Packrafts are designed for floating moving water and for crossing rivers that you really should not try and swim across. They are not the ideal craft for paddling still water as you find in lakes and bays. In this context "still" means water without strong currents though their are currents in the Great Lakes. You would not use a packraft for a large open water crossing since you cannot go terribly fast in the packraft. For that sort of trip a kayak or even canoe is still the far better choice. But if you need a boat that only weighs 4.7 pounds and are in an area where backpacking and paddling are the ideal modes of travel then a packraft like my Alpacka is the way to go.

The trip was a success and I already have some ideas for the return visit. As usual you can find the trip photo journal and just the photo gallery from the home pages What's New section as well as on the main Travel page. Direct links are below.
