Chapter 8
Michael sat silently in the Section vehicle as three accompanying operatives guarded him on the final leg of the trip to Section One. The flight had been long, Michael unable to sleep, agonizing over the condition that he knew she was in. According to what Michael had retrieved from the Section computers, Walter had been correct in his account of the scenario. Nikita was literally ‘lost within herself’. She was completely separated from the incredibly strong woman that he had left that day at that train station so many years ago. Each minute that separated him from her was another lost minute that never should have been. He berated himself over and over in his mind for ever thinking that she would be able to handle the atrocities that Section and Oversight would lay at her feet.
At her core was a compassionate woman that was able to give love in a manner that he had never seen in another person in his wretched life. Her ability to convey her inner warmth was beyond his comprehension. He just knew that no matter whose life she touched somehow she enriched it with her smile, and her beauty, and her inner warmth. She had done it to him. No matter how hard he had pushed her away, she was tenacious about saving him, about loving him. He was one of the most unworthy men, yet she saw enough to want to save him. And once she had decided that was something she needed to do there was no stopping her.
He had to do whatever he could to help her get back to that person. He had to know that the essence of Nikita was still alive, still vibrant. Then he had every intention of protecting it until he took his last breath in this life. No one would ever touch her inner self again. No one. He had silently vowed that to himself over and over as he continued to agonize about her current mental state. He would make sure that they never had the opportunity to get near her again. She was his mission now and failure was inconceivable.
His anger was building to the point that he almost couldn’t control it. It was far too dangerous to walk into Section One with the murderous thoughts that were running through his head. That would do no good in the current situation so he forced himself to send his thoughts in another direction. The only thing that could distract him even a little was Adam. He went over the details again.
Yes, he was completely set financially and would never have to worry about money. Michael also had him well guarded, although Adam would never know it. There were layers of security surrounding him that Michael had profiled and re-profiled many times over the last days. He knew that there was no need to worry, but he found it much harder than he expected. It was difficult not to think of Adam as that young, scared boy that needed him so much. He understood now what it meant for a parent to always see their child as they were when they were young. So much guidance and wisdom needed to be instilled. Adam had been, and still was an incredibly bright boy. And Michael had known for some time that his pupil was quickly outsmarting the teacher.
Yes, he would miss him, and he would worry.
But as the nondescript entrance to Section approached he now had to focus on the mission before him. Nikita needed him, in the most fundamental way, and he would not fail her.

Brianna received work in the Perch that Michael had arrived and she quickly made her way to van access.
He looked exactly as his file showed. Handsome, strong, and with a deadly look in his eyes that almost caused her to take a step back as he walked into the hallway where she stood. He was just as intimidating as she expected, but she had not expected the level of fear that crept into her consciousness. He was extremely dangerous, it was contained at the moment, but she knew his anger was not far from his reserved surface expression.
“Michael Samuelle, I’m Brianna.”
“Yes, I know.”
“How…?” She slapped herself internally for the slip. She was in charge here, not him. But still, how did he know who she was? He had been in the systems. She made a quick mental note to have Jason rake the system. Then with almost split second recovery she went on, “We have quarters arranged for you in the Tower. Additionally I have made your office available to you at any time. And Dr. Johansson, Nikita’s doctor, is waiting to speak with you.”
“I want to see Nikita now.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea and neither does the doctor. This has been discussed internally as we anticipated your first move. Her state is somewhat fragile. The doctor will further explain.”
His frustration was mounting and with it anger. He had waited years, been separated from the woman that he loved and he would not remain apart from her any longer. “I want to see…”
His words were interrupted by one voice that he would hesitate for, at least this once. “Hey, Michael. Good to see you again.”
When Michael turned to greet Walter, the older man was struck by the pain that was embedded in Michael’s eyes. “Why don’t we go to your office and talk a little while about Nikita? That is if Brianna doesn’t mind if I borrow you?”
Brianna took what she wanted to say and shoved it to the back of her mind, just as Nikita had taught her to do. “Not at all. I’ll let the doctor know where you are so he can speak with you in a while.”
Michael nodded and headed to his old office. Walter closed the door, “There is no surveillance here. Nikita wouldn’t allow it in this office.”
It was strange enough being back in the Section and seeing all the faces of operatives that he didn’t know. But to walk back into this office, where everything seemed to be exactly as it was years ago was off-putting and Michael was trying to process it all. Walter watched and he could see the inner struggle that Michael was having, “She would never let anyone use this office. This is where she would come to think after you left. She always hated the Tower, said this was the one place where she could clear her head. I had many long talks in here with her.”
Michael sat down behind the desk and tried to bring his own thoughts into order. There was so much that needed to be done. “Has there been any change?”
Walter sighed, “No. She’s the same.”
“This doctor…?”
“Simon. He’s a good guy Michael. They are holding his family down on Level 8. As far as I can tell their exposure has been minimal and if Simon can get our girl back then the family will be released.”
“Is he helping Nikita?”
“He’s trying. That’s all anyone can do at this point.”
Michael hesitated only a moment in thought, “I want to see him now. I have to help her Walter.”
“Ok amigo. I’ll get the doc. You sit tight.”
As Walter was opening the door he looked back at Michael, “You ok?”
For a split second, in the back of his mind an ingrained response almost came from his lips. Instead he spoke the truth, “No.”
