The sun came brightly through Nikita’s room the next morning. She woke up and felt delighted. Her night before had been so unexpected and she was pleased it went so well.
She heard her door open and saw her mother enter the room. Her mother smiled at her and came over to the bed, “Good morning my dear. Did you have a splendid night?”
Nikita smiled at her. “Surprisingly yes mother. I did not expect to have fun and enjoy myself as much as I did.”
Madeline held her hands and asked curiously, “What did you think of Michael?”
Nikita thought how she would answer the question to her feelings about Michael. “Well mother, he is indeed very handsome. He is the most beautiful man I have ever seen. He was very kind and a gentleman towards me last night. I still wish to know him better. He liked my physical appearance like most men do.”
Madeline smiled. “He was smitten with you last night. His mother was quite surprised as well.”
Nikita said, “He has to have a lover mother. A man of his looks must have multiple lovers. When I danced with him, I sensed something blocking his emotions. Although he was quite pleasant, he was at times without emotion in his demeanor. Perhaps he has been wronged or hurt by a woman before.”
Madeline said in response, “Well Nikita, it is good you are curious about him. You will have a few weeks to get to know and ask him questions.”
Nikita shook her head negatively, “Mother he is a gentleman, but I do not sense he would want to open up to me. He is so gorgeous he has to have some vanity and pride. He may win a lot of women over, but it takes more than looks to capture my heart. I still cannot believe I have to marry him. What is on the agenda today?”
Her mother smiled, “We are to have breakfast with the Samuelles. You and Michael are to have the whole day together with an escort looking out for you.”
Nikita gawked at her mother. “You mean I have to get to know Michael under constant eyes at all times. This is impossible!”
Madeline answered, “It is the way things are done Nikita.”
“Mother, I am to marry this man. I would like some alone time with him before I marry. That is not too much to ask. I have to spend my life with him and have a child. It is only fair since I am giving up my life, I should at least be given the opportunity to know him without watchful eyes and ears.”
“Nikita. I know this is hard. But it has to be this way. Nothing can go wrong before your union with him.”
“Oh I see mother. So if we are alone, everyone thinks I will try to rape him with my wildish wanting of him. That I wish to strip him bare-naked and smother him with my body. This is ridiculous. I cannot be myself if someone is watching us the whole time and I will never get to know him for who he is. All of these proper and English family rituals are quite intolerable,” Nikita said smartly. “Last night was a lot of fun, but I see the dumb activities I have no choice but to participate in.”
“I am so sorry my dear,” Madeline apologized. “Please ready yourself for breakfast.”
