Subject: One Last Note . . .

This is a difficult note for me to write, seeing as how I'm actually saying, "Goodbye." And, to all those who have no interest in such a message, I do deeply apologize for taking up board space with it. Still, I've decided, all this time and these many stories later, that "Dreams in the Dark" will be my last LFN story. I'm sorry to anyone whom I disappoint with this news. Over the past four (five?--I've lost track) years that it's taken me to write this latest tale, however, a few things have changed. I feel that life is now pulling me in a different direction.

Allow me a few moments to tell you my thoughts. When I first started writing LFN fiction, I never even imagined being able to create my own plots or characters; that's why the fanfic world--especially the sort of fill-in-the-blanks stories LFN was so good at provoking in me--was so kind. The characters (or my interpretations of them, at least) were already there. All I had to do was put down on paper my own idea of what each of our favorites might have been thinking--or my take on the conversations or scenes we never quite got to see. Although I'd written a bit of fanfic before I discovered our favorite show, writing these stories helped me gain confidence. For this, I'm incredibly grateful both to TPTB for providing such a rich environment to play in and to all of you who were kind enough to read and respond to my work.

I never anticipated where such "free-time" writing would take me--just like it never occurred to me that "Dreams" would go on for 318 parts and take several years to see through to its end. During that time, I've written one whole novel on the side and have a few, beginning chapters of another one. Whether either of these will ever see the light of day is doubtful, as I'm racking up an unhealthy number of rejection letters, but I still want to focus more on them. The one I've only just begun is practically making me itch to write it. Still, with my focus on "Dreams"--and my determination to stick to enough of a schedule to be able to finish it for those who want to read it--I haven't had the time to write a single chapter of my other project since much earlier this year.

It's because of this desire to focus on these other works that I've decided to stop writing LFN stories. I know as well that, to many of you, this is probably not particularly meaningful news; the series ended so long ago now that I sometimes feel like there are only the few of us left who even remember it--and I'm certainly not the only author who tried her hand at these stories. There's no particular reason why anyone should even notice my absence. Still, to those of you who will be kind enough to miss my stories, I apologize for leaving you. I know how much I miss my favorite authors who have gone on to pursue their lives beyond our little world of LFN fic. If you can, think a good thought for me, as I try to write and get published. Maybe someday I'll be lucky enough to be able to present you with another tale in a different form.

Let me just end this small rambling with two more expressions of my gratitude. First, to dear Arlis, I so deeply thank you for all the years of time and energy you've put into reformatting and posting my stories. And, to all those who've been so incredibly kind in following and enjoying my work, bless you. Thank you for a decade of mutual fun and support. Thank you for giving me the confidence to put my ideas down on paper. Thank you for embracing me, as I found my way. I've made friends through my writing whom I deeply cherish. I wish you all the joy that LFN brought each of us many, many more times in your futures. Thank you for making me even a small part of your lives, as well.

With so much gratitude to all,
Katherine
