Nikita was laying in the fields with Daisy when she heard the servant, Percy calling out her name.
She held up her hand to block the sun. “Yes Percy. What is it?”
Percy was out of breath and tried to deliever his message clearly. “Your parents ask for your audience at once.”
Nikita was a bit concerned. “Is everything alright? Is Mama okay?”
“Yes Lady Nikita. Your mother and father only requested to see you this moment. That is all I know.” Percy started back towards the castle.
Nikita rode Daisy fast back to the castle to answer the request of her parents. She found it quite odd that they would call her in this way, but it must be very important. Maybe her cousin, Lord Bauer had done something. She had learned about him throughout her entire life and at times she would hear about the horrid things he did to his people on his estate and the surrounding neighbors.
She walked up to her parents’ sitting room and walked in. She found them both staring at her quite seriously. It alarmed her a bit, but she kept her countenance.
She went over and kissed them both. “Good morning Papa. Good morning Mama. You requested my audience?”
Paul looked at her intensely. “Please sit my dear daughter.” Madeline found it hard to look at her daughter.
Nikita could not keep her patience. “Mama, is something wrong? Papa, please tell me.”
Paul raised his hand. “Nikita , I will demand that you remain silent whilst we speak. Understood?” He demanded.
“Yes, of course Father.” Nikita replied. She was a bit scared. Her father had always been a stern man, but he was very serious. She knew he always had high expectations of how she should behave He touched his wife’s hand and she nodded to him that she wanted him to begin the conversation.
He looked into Nikita’s eyes. “My daughter. As you know, you have been born into a family of high title and fortune. You are our only child and we have been blessed these passed sixteen years. As a daughter of a Wolfe, you will have certain obligations to your people of your estate and to your family. This is the way of things.”
Nikita had heard speeches similar before, but was wondering why she yet had to hear it again. She nodded in understanding to her father.
“Nikita, your uncle, Lord Bauer wants our lands, our people, our fortune. He is a most horrible man who had killed many in reckless battles over land and squandered his family name and wealth. He is very manipulative and always gets what he wants through violence. It’s my duty as well as yours to protect the people of this estate and ensure your protection to your wealth as well.” Paul breathed in heavily.
Nikita wanted to speak. She did not get where this was going. “Father? I am sorry to interrupt, but what is it I can do to help with what you speak of?”
Her mother stood up. “Oh Paul. Enough beating around the bush. Nikita,” she spoke softly. “We made a marriage contract when you were a young girl----.”
Nikita interrupted her mother. “WHAT ARE YOU SPEAKING OF?” She freaked out so much that almost could not breathe.
Her father yelled back. “Young lady. You will sit down immediately and act like a lady. Remain silent. I will not tell you once more.” He was furious at his daughter. She was to be married in six months and should not to be acting like crazy female. “You will learn your place among this world Nikita.”
Nikita could see she was upsetting her parents and relented. This was a nightmare and she felt like passing out. “I apologize Mama.” She looked at her father. Tears were about to flow out of her eyes.
Madeline could understand her daughter’s pain. “You will marry a man of great title and wealth. He is one of the most respected gentleman in England and France. He is cousin to the King. His name is Michael Samuelle.”
Nikita looked up in amazement. Everyone knew that name. He had quite a reputation and status. He was one of the best swordsmen in the country and rumored to be extremely full of pride. She had also heard that he had a heart as cold as solid ice.
“We leave for his home a month hence where you both shall meet and get to know each other a bit better. I know this is a shock, my dear.” Madeline stopped talking. She did not wish to overwhelm her daughter. Madeline looked to Paul to let their daughter take in all of their news.
“You may go Nikita.” Her father also did not wish to add more stress to Nikita.
Nikita politely left the room and ran up to her bedroom to cry. She would have argued with them, but she had no strength. She had too much to process. She loved Gray. She did not wish to marry a pompous old poppycock. She wished her mother would come up to her and just hug her. She fell asleep after shedding many tears.
