MR. JONES

Philip Jones was a ruthless man who successfully manipulated his destiny and lived in a Universe of his own making. He giftedly orchestrated every step of his orderly life and never went down a path he had not personally paved. He was in charge, he was connected, and he was not going to allow anyone to stand in the way of his objectives. Nevertheless, as the common folk know, the piper stands to the side of life and eventually expects his pay and Jones' debt was no different. Therefore, the powerful and brilliantly heroic man who calculated and managed even affairs of the heart, one fine day met his Achilles-heel in the form of prospective parenthood.

Mr. Jones knew well that there was no such thing as free-will in the web he had weaved. He also knew that everyone must answer to a higher-up and Philip dutifully answered to the Organization and Country and not necessarily in that order. So when Josephine, his trusty Russian assistance (an abeyance operative) announced that she was pregnant with their child, poor Philip watched as his harmonious Planet buckled before his distrusting eyes. How was he going to save the woman and the child from the organization he helped build or for that matter the organization itself?

As he fantasized about giving it all up and perhaps someday retiring to raise his children, Philip formulated a convoluted personal mission that he would have to run on his own. For if only one solitary individual were to discover his intentions, then Philip would surely loose his much worn-out trump card. There were loads of factors that he needed to take into consideration, and he was well aware that there would be sacrifices and consequences. Now, in the meantime he needed to continue his work and his almighty posture, so as not to raise eyebrows or potentially dangerous questions.

Of course, gossip and innuendo was prevalent even in a place like Oversight, so as the months passed and Josephine's condition became noticeable, damage control was the word of the day. Josephine felt more and more disconnected from the outside world when Philip moved Oversight to his modern house on the hill and placed her under house arrest. Away from prying eyes, the blonde-haired woman made demands that would proof fatal to her position in the man's life.

Nevertheless, one day in the heat of an argument she demanded and begged that she be taken to an outside hospital and not be made to deliver her child in Med Lab as Jones proposed. The light bulb over his head lit, as if he was a character from some comic strip, because he knew that being anonymous (just another pregnant woman), would insure that the Organization remain oblivious to the baby's existence. The old hide in plain sight routine was always a valuable tool.

During the ensuing last few weeks of gestation, he cleverly compiled the necessary elements to his perfect plan. Jones created the Sydney sub-section to be known as Section 4, a simple research facility that would eventually evolve into the development of underage operatives. He quickly moved his team, including Josephine to the beautiful Australian city. She stayed clear of Philip and he in turn remained completely immersed in his work thus allowing his futile emotions to disappear and managing to put to rest any rumors about his assistant, who people whispered had probably been put in abeyance because of being with child.

The baby was born in the house the leader of the clandestine organization and the beautiful Russian woman shared. Jones delivered the gorgeous little baby girl without any problems, after all the mother was a healthy, fit 22 year old. The baby weight a hefty 8 pounds and one ounce, and was 22 inches long. While the 50 year-old Jones was busy tending to the wailing child, the young mother made the ultimate sacrifice to insure that the man she loved and the baby she adored could keep their standing on this earth intact.

Josephine spoke to Jones in hushed tones thanking him for allowing her the joy of bringing a baby into the World and asking him to name the baby Nikita. When Jones asked why name their beautiful little girl after an old Communist leader, Josephine only smiled and this softened the man's rock-hard heart. She quickly explained that she understood what needed to be done and then simply asked Jones to bring her water. Jones put the baby down on a pretty bassinette by the side of the bed and smiled at the woman he now vowed to save.

As the man moved to the adjacent room, Josephine retrieved a previously hidden weapon from a bedside drawer and pointed it at the door. When Jones' walked in she shot at his leg and then took her own life. Jones' recognized the sickly clicking sound of the silencer and then the warm feel of his tricking blood dancing down his leg. He rushed ignoring the pain, to the woman's side, but it was too late. Josephine had given Phillip the greatest proof of love - her life.

Nikita slept peacefully in the tiny basket were Jones had placed her as her mother's lifeless body laid nearby. Jones, not being able to put aside his training and ignoring his wound, simply moved to dispose of the body and erase all evidence of Josephine, the birth or the crime. The disposal of the baby would be his last decision in this long difficult period that he had entered as a moment of carnal weakness made him forget who he was.

-----

While doing recognizance when he first arrived in Australia, for future use in his work, Jones found the Westmead Hospital in Sydney. And now, at this moment of confusion while he fed the baby sugar-water after having hastily dressed his wounds, the image of the hospital loomed in his mind. He swaddled the baby nicely and hid her sleeping body under his coat in the front seat of the car. He advised his watchers that he was going to the hospital to do further fact-gathering in the children's wing; a good cover as to why he needed to be alone and could not be followed.

He talked and sang to the baby, a very unnatural behavior for the head of Oversight, and in his own way explained to the little baby-girl who he was, who he had been and what incredible gift her mother had given her. When they arrived at the bright hallways of the emergency room the place was in chaos with too many patients due to an autobus accident on a main highway caused by a drunk. Jones entered a supply closet, donned a lab coat and swaddled Nikita with a hospital issued blanket, hoping to come up with a plan that would save the child.

As luck would have it, a very drunk Roberta Wirth was sitting in a wheelchair in labor screaming her head off for she was in pain. Roberta had cause the accident and now all she wanted was drugs to ease her labor-pains, never mind the scrape and bruises she received when the car hit the bus. In the disorder of the emergency room, Jones pretended to be a doctor and quickly administered drugs to the woman who he wheeled into a small empty room.

Her screams could be heard in every room of the hospital until Jones took charged and in his unparalleled way put the fear of God into the woman. After calming her with drugs, he commenced taking down Roberta's personal information so that in the future he could always keep track of the woman. He then switched Nikita for the baby girl the drunken woman had just delivered and he prepared Roberta's daughter to go with him to 4. Roberta's little baby would become the first experimental trainee in Subsection Four.

Jones reasoned on his way home that it would not be until Nikita was a full grown woman and out on her own that Jones would bring his daughter back into the fold. He wanted her trained, educated, cleaned up and polished, but for the time being he just wanted her to be free, but safe. Little did he know that the beautiful young woman that someday would be Operations, would suffer the slings and arrows of providence - which is always a beatch.
