Michael’s Mercedes V8 Kompressor roared along the autostrata towards Setubal, south of Lisbon. His mind was racing, overwhelmed with thoughts of just what had happened to Adrian and Nikita, and if the Society had deliberately allowed them to escape. But the overpowering thought possessing him was the fact he would be seeing Nikita again.

Adrian stated Nikita wished to return to Center....and her Father....why?

But the statement eating away at Michael the most was when Adrian said.....”.....she does not want to return to the villa...or you.....”

Michael pressed the accelerator harder and the Mercedes streaked past the surrounding countryside.

He must not allow his emotions for Nikita to fog his judgement....if the Society has allowed them to escape....there was a reason.....he must retrieve both women and return to the villa immediately.

Nikita sat impatiently watching Adrian peck away at her plate of food. The driver sat in a far corner of the café eating a plate of pasta; he glanced nervously over at the two women.

“Ahhhh....you don’t seem to be that hungry now Adrian....we should really be on our way...it won’t be easy to find flights direct to Paris or London....we need to leave....it’s a long drive along the coastal road.”

Adrian looked up from her pasta salad, reached for her tea and smiled. “Oh please, let’s not rush too much my dear...I’m starting to feel much better and if we go dashing off, I’m afraid my headache will return.” She motioned to Nikita’s uneaten food. “You should eat something....we must keep up our strength....one never knows what might happen next on our little adventure.”

“Adventure? Well, that’s one way to label a kidnapping, and desperate escape. But we should go now if you’ve finished....and don’t worry about me....I’m not hungry.”

Nikita rose and motioned the waiter to the driver for payment of the meal. “Sorry if I’m rushing you Adrian....but we’ve stayed here too long.”

Adrian placed her tea cup on the saucer, quickly glanced at her watch and smiled. “Oh, very well....but I should use the facilities before undertaking a long drive.”

“Okay....okay....but please hurry,” Nikita grimaced.

Nikita sat in the rear seat of the car watching the driver tap his fingers on the steering wheel. He turned to face her. “Maybe you should go check on the old lady....she’s been gone awhile.”

“She’ll be here....don’t worry about her,” she peered from the side window towards the café.

“You’d think she didn’t want to make this trip....like she was maybe stalling or something.”

“Don’t be ridiculous....she’s just not feeling well...she has some health issues...she’s...here she is now!”

Adrian slid into the seat beside Nikita. “I’m terribly sorry to have kept you both waiting....we can proceed now.”

The driver put the car in gear and pulled back onto the winding coastal road heading north towards Lisbon.

Esperanzo sat under the sun umbrella, sipping a rum. The winter air was still chilled and the sun held little heat. On a table in front of him, a computer screen showed a tracking device signal. Esperanzo tapped the keyboard, filling the screen with a map of coastal Portugal and two tracking blips moving slowly north. He smiled, sipped his drink and reached for the mobile phone.

“Carlos...yes I’m watching their progress....keep your distance...they will no doubt head for the international airport....confirm their destination and report back...”

Nikita watched Adrian closely; she appeared to be dozing. “Adrian....Adrian....are you alright?”

“Hummmm....wha....what....oh yes....just drowsy....don’t you feel somewhat out of sorts too Nikita....”

“Maybe a little tired....sorry if I woke you, I was concerned you might have been having another reaction to the drugs....please try and sleep again.”

“You should also my dear,” she smiled.

Nikita nodded and closed her eyes, sinking down lower onto the seat. The problem was when she did try to sleep, her mind was overwhelmed with images of Michael. The sound of the wheels on the rough coastal road began to lull her.

When would she stop thinking about Michael....force him completely from her thoughts. How was she to ever create a new life....with her own identity....if she constantly was haunted by images of Michael....pictures of Michael and her on the beach together, skiing together....working together....but most of all - making love. Damn! Why was the man so wonderful making love to her.....his mere touch could drive her over the edge.

Nikita squirmed on the seat, as she fought to push the sensation of Michael’s hands caressing her body, from her mind. She opened her eyes and straightened up, staring ahead at the road.

Damn him! He will not possess me like this....soon as I return to London...I need to go out and have a multitude of affairs....with as many men as will have me....anything to drive Michael’s memory from my mind!

Adrian peeked over at Nikita and smiled, glancing carefully at her watch.
