The following days, Nikita received many presents from Chandler. She got flowers, a box of chocolate, perfume and more. When she was telling her father about it, he would listen with mild acceptance, knowing that warning her would only make the man seem more attractive to her.
Nikita’s friends were excited with her latest experiences, except for Lillian Viscano. She was somewhat withdrawn after she’d heard the stories. But because of the light hearted banter and chatter going around, no one noticed.
When they finally broke up the gathering, they made an appointment to see each other again after the dinner-meeting with Chandler had happened.
And finally it was there.
The evening started with Michael and Nikita leaving together to the restaurant located in a high society shopping quarter.
A much exited Nikita was chatting all the way about the all she got from Chandler. It took a great deal of tolerance from Michael to hear her talking about the flowers and presents that the man had bestowed upon her during the pass time. Then finally they arrived at the establishment and entering the building, there was Jurgen waiting in the lounge for their arrival. The other staff members were also present.
Immediately a waiter approached them and requested them to follow him to a more secluded part of the restaurant. Chandler and his party, already present, were waiting for them to join him.
They stood up and welcomed them enthusiastically, inquired the necessary accordingly, while Chandler extended his hand to Nikita and maneuvered her beside himself and away from Michael.
Jurgen saw an opportunity and hurried to settle himself at the other side of Nikita.
Michael found himself on the opposite side of the table, flanked by the solicitor and lawyer. This whole arrangement made him feel uneasy but he decided to see how things would play out.
Chandler was very cheerful, as cordial as much a man in his position could be without offending his one time business opponents.
He mostly kept himself busy with the young lady and Jurgen, who made sure to be part of their conversation at all times, while Michael had to deal with the others next to him.
Michael decided to concentrate on the matters at hand as long as they were seated, to keep his mind on the business and make sure that the papers were signed before the evening was over. After that he would take care of Nikita. She would leave the party with no-one else but him.
As the evening went on, Chandler’s men kept him busy with whatever twist and turns according the plans. They tried to turn some of Chandler’s earlier statements into a different direction, but Michael did not budge one bit. Either they accepted and sealed the agreement today or the deal was off, now or never.
With that and a smile from Chandler, the documents appeared on the table and Michael started to read the first one, signing it and passing it through to someone else to do the same. He repeated that with all the other documents until the pile was completed. As expected there were no misunderstandings in the documents, as if they knew he wouldn’t give in.
After they’d signed the papers, the party toasted on Chandler’s good fortune on this deal. Now the company could relax for real and the party could begin in earnest.
The company spread out through the establishment, to mingle with other visitors they happened to know. Only Michael kept his distance a little with Nikita in his view sight constantly. While Nikita was surrounded by admirers, she was too pre-occupied to notice him watching her. But the men around her were very conscious of his staring gaze.
Michael was glad that the meeting had lasted long enough; it took the best part of the evening. He wasn’t sure if Chandler had planned it this way, but it suited him even more. The evening was rapidly running late. Michael slowly made his way towards Nikita and at least two men noticed his movements, Jurgen and Chandler. Quickly Chandler whispered something in her ears and she turned around looking for Michael. When she saw him coming her way, she walked up to meet him half way.
She and Chandler had planned to go somewhere else, but she didn’t want Chandler to hear her telling Michael the decision they’d made, in case Michael would argue her depart with someone else than him.
“Michael, Alex has invited me to go to his yacht and I hope that you wouldn’t mind to give my father the message of my being home later.”
“I don’t think that it’s a good idea, Nikita. I promised your father that I’d be back with you, so please, don’t make me have to break that promise?”
“Would he truly mind that I stay out a little longer with Chandler?”
“I do believe that we should consider him, especially since things aren’t the usual lately, don’t you agree?”
With resignation she turned back to Chandler to tell him that she had changed her mind but would love to see his yacht on some other occasion. With the promise to call her, Nikita left with Michael.
On the ride home, she tried to hear him out about Chandler, but Michael wasn’t really forthcoming.
“We don’t often get the chance to talk in private, Michael. And now that we have, I would like to ask you a few things.”
“What do you want to know?”
“What do you think of Chandler?”
“He’s a straight forward businessman, right at his goal.”
“But as a person, a man?”
“I don’t know him well enough to answer that question. We never had a conversation on a personal level.”
“But you must have a first impression of him because he respected all your demands. Is he to be trusted?”
Michael thought about her intentions and decided to be frank with her. Since he had more than a first impression, he could tell her anything. But Nikita wasn’t one to react as you expected or hoped for. He was never sure how…
“What you’re really asking me is, can you marry a man like Chandler?”
“I do agree that he doesn’t look like the marrying kind but I do think that he’d want to settle some time, don’t you think?”
“Probably, but I wouldn’t know his feelings on that matter. I can only advise you to consider this carefully, Nikita. Sometimes things aren’t what they seem.”
“You don’t say something like this without reason, Michael. If there’s something I need to know, just tell me.”
“What I’m saying is take your time. I only want you to be careful.”
“You’re in protective mood again, just like my father. Sometimes Michael, I wish you’d be more generous with your words. To talk some more, to be more unconstrained. I don’t want to have to always guess the true meaning of what you’re saying. It’s exhausting, you know that?”
“I’m sorry to disappoint you, Nikita.”
“No Michael, you don’t disappoint me. But maybe you and my father should try to have a little bit more faith in me.”
Michael didn’t respond on the accusation. So the ride home proceeded in quietness as both were pre-occupied with their own thoughts.
