The next days were emotionally exhausting for every one in the household of Jones, because of the many visitors that needed to work on the coming funeral. The doctor, coroner, undertaker and many more involved.
Nikita didn’t know about all this, if it weren’t because of Adrian, she would have crashed already. She let Adrian do all the talking and signing papers and everything else to arrange the funeral.

From the moment people have read the obituary in the newspaper, the condolences started to come in by phone calls and mail. Roberta even came to the house to see Phillip lying there pale and cold and this time she was sober. She couldn’t keep herself from sneering at him and make hurtful remarks. No one commented on her observations so she left the house as soon as possible.

The funeral was mostly the same as many others, except that, because of Roberta, it almost ended in a disaster for Nikita.
They started of well at the church, many attendants, a great speech and a choir that sang the stars from the sky. Soon after they walked to the burial ground and lowered the coffin down into the grave, all in silence. The only one you could here was the priest repeating the sermons over again. Finally it was over and everyone regrouped for the reception afterwards in a hotel nearby.

Surrounded by her friends who were talking all the time, Nikita wasn’t really listening to them. She was like oblivious to the scenery around her. And if she would pay attention, than she’d have noticed that Viscano was talking to Chandler in a quiet secluded corner. The gestures she made indicated a very urgent and private matter at hand. Terry however had kept an eye on the couple and the moment she thought right, she made a remark about it at Nikita. With that she came out of her inducement at once.

In another corner, Roberta was having a fit with Jurgen. He was trying to keep her from making a scene because Adrian was playing the part Roberta thought belonged to her self. At the same time, Viscano was becoming slightly vocal and fed up with Chandler.

For a moment Nikita didn’t know what to do, but decided that her mother was the most urgent to deal with, so she made her way towards the woman. That situation was turning out to become nasty. Why on earth her mother had to order liquor on an occasion like this, Nikita will never understand, but it was obvious that she was more than tipsy. Roberta started to proclaim that her life with the deceased had been far from happy and that what goes around comes around, etc.

Always mindful of the situation, Michael sent for a cab and they took care that Roberta was sent home.
Nikita was getting more miserable than before, so she turned to Michael for comfort and he did so tenderly by putting his arm around her.
Together they went back inside, while just as they walked in, Lillian Viscano stalked towards the door and pushed pass Nikita, cursing intelligibly, but her last word sounded like ‘bastard’ to Nikita.
Immediately Nikita sought out Chandler, but he was nowhere to be seen. Jurgen rushed over to her and said: “if you’re looking for him, he’s cleaning himself up in the bathroom”.
Immediately Michael made his way to the bathroom to see if he could offer any help.

And Jurgen went on: “Chandler is not the man for you, Nikita. He’s not innocent in the downfall of your father’s company. Maybe you should ask Michael about it?”
After throwing this upon her, he stalked away.

Nikita stood there like frozen. All sorts of thoughts were rushing through her mind in disorder. She knew Jurgen wasn’t to be trusted completely, but that Chandler had taken part in this? And what about Michael? The mere thought that even Michael was guilty in this matter made her shiver.
She felt a terrible headache coming up and suddenly she wanted to run, fly away from the reception and every one around her. But she couldn’t move.
Something was wrong. Her subconscious was registering that someone was holding her back, but her mind failed to acknowledge until she heard a voice saying something to her. Realizing that she had to answer, she looked up in Adrian’s face, which was filled with concern about Nikita.
“Are you alright, dear?”

“Yes, yes, I’m fine, but I’d like to leave now, if that’s not a problem. I have to be alone for a while.”
“Of course my dear, I’ll let Michael see to everything.” She turned and signaled to Michael to come and they discussed how to proceed further.
Than, after they’ve said goodbye to everyone, Adrian left the reception with Nikita.

As soon as they arrived home, Nikita went straight to her room, fell on the bed and shed the tears she’d been holding up for so long. A few minutes after, Adrian came in with a cup of tea in her hand. She sat next to Nikita, caressing her. “It’s alright, dear. It will do you good to cry some.”
“I came too late. He must have wanted to say something. Why am I like this? Why haven’t I been more cooperative? He wanted to leave a legacy, to be proud of me. And I didn’t let him.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, Nikita. You’ve tried and I’m sure he’s forgiven you everything. He only wished that, with the right person in your life, you could have a better life than he’s had. Michael and I will always be there for you when you need us, Nikita.”

“Will you be leaving soon?”

“No dear, not in a few weeks. Come on, drink your tea and try to take some rest. Everything will be alright, you’ll see.” Adrian left her to rest.
But as soon as she was lying under the sheets, she remembered what Jurgen had said.
