The surviving five brothers of Eva’s father and their immediate families, had always carried the Van Damn name with humble modesty. Thankfully, the twins’ progenitors had not lived to see the debauchery brought to their noble door by their only daughter and youngest son. Single Eva and married with children Adam had 4 older brothers whom where wedded with grandchildren of their own. The Van Damn elders watched in disbelief as Eva not only sullied their wellborn name, but also shamefully heeded her siren call recruiting cousins, nephews and nieces to join her.
If Eva had the luxury of time to make a choice of a traveling companion at the time of expatriation she would have chosen her brother Adam as her sole companion. But without that choice, negated further by her twin’s need to have his offsprings near, Eva was forced to bring with her some family members that were opened to the same mindset and beliefs that she held so dear. When the group disappeared from Holland, the Van Damns that were left behind became social pariahs and tried to no avail to clear the name that Eva’s proclivities had dishonored.
It was too late for the remaining family to mend the wrongs their kin created, and two years to the day after Eva left Holland they themselves were forced to set sail for the New World. The group was comprised of married couples, the exiled cousins and even Adam’s wife Elena. The refugees hopefully would bring with them the possibility of putting an end to the inbreeding the beautiful Eva preferred. Upon arriving a year later, Adam’s wife finding that in fact the abhorrent behavior had flourished to other members of the family, and in a desperate moment of blinding rage put an end to Eva and Adam’s lives.
The surviving Van Damn brothers, upon the death of their only sister and her twin and the subsequent familial tragedies of suicide and the likes, made a pact to insure the honorable continuation of the Van Damn name and to eradicate the health afflictions on the family bloodline. They set a plan in motion and they withdrew to themselves, shutting out the world and its critical faculty. But mostly, they swore to guard the children born in that terrible period of time from any harm that could come to them, because of their differences or their handicaps.
It was now 1656 and in such a short period of time the once illustrious Van Damns were once again forced to retreat from the world surrounding them, and chose this time to disappear behind the walls of the compound Eva had built.
----
Through the passage of time the Van Damns created a peculiarly defused family tree, some sides with no branches and others quite ordinary. The Consanguinous magnitude of inbreeding in humans was being closely studied by the brilliant Van Damns. Thankfully the entire clan had not embraced the abhorrent habits that Eva and her twin had developed, and only a select few were cursed with the genetic weaknesses that the King had feared. Time healed many of the scars the offensive traditions created and eventually, the direct inbreeding simply became intimacy with twice and thrice removed blood relations and unrelated kin.
However the family had a deep sense of fidelity and allegiance to those members afflicted with the hereditary deficiencies that came with human inbreeding and all continued to live behind the closed doors of the family mansion. Eventually the family’s desire to cure its own failed to materialize once more and for the first time a decision to seek outside counsel was voted upon. What followed set the Van Damm family in yet another different direction. Although closely guarded, the scars of the fable would be impossible to erase from their pedigree, even 300 years after the fact.
