The year was 1937 and not only because of their high I.Q., but also because of the long ago pact, the family chose Jean Paul and Magdalene, very distant cousins of Eva, to study in France. To preserve the family bloodline and to protect the children, all eligible daughters and sons would be sent to various geographic locations to be educated. France was the choice locale for educating a Van Damn child. The process of selecting whom went where and who stayed was quite convoluted since the family had failed in 300 years to create the perfect male; a Van Damn male.
Jean Paul and Magdalene were also chosen because of their parentage and at the age of 9 were sent to live with Dr. Stanley Shays in France. It was there, in the City of Lights that the greatest geneticists of the time were being cultivated. Paris was a hot bed for early research, determination of A and / or B characteristics, exact genotypes, alleles and blood antigens; all revolutionary discoveries for the time.
In 1950 after graduating from the Sourbon University in Paris, Jean Paul and Magdalene were eagerly returning to their family for the first time after finishing their studies. The distant relations believed they were ready to fulfill their familial duty of restoring the sparkle to the Van Damn name. The judicious son and daughter returned to their respective parents’ fold and brought with them what they believed to be the key to the gilded cage the family had locked themselves in so long before.
The excited pair approached the pier on the mainland and inquired about renting a boat to take them to their home on Van Damn Island. The gentleman that answered their inquiry chuckled. Realizing the pair was serious, his demeanor changed and then he calmly asked, "The Van Damm estate? Heck it’s been gone for ages, at least 10 years. Folks from the mainland found out what went on over there. Horrible stories only Beelzebub himself would conceive.”
The boat captain paused momentarily to suck on the ratty end of his cigar before continuing, “They burnt down the properties making damn sure that those heathens were destroyed and that no trace of their offensive lifestyle remained.”
Jean Paul and Magdalene did what needed to be done to get to the family abode, without alerting any other mainlanders as to their presence. Suffice it to say that the Captain would be smoking no more. Now they stood on the bow of the vessel they had pilfered and watched in disbelief as the words of the deceased proofed true.
When they came in close proximity to the island where the Van Damm home rested on a cliff, they could clearly see the land their family had amassed through years of hard labor and the sight before them caused them deep despair. They watched in horror as parts of their patrimonial legacy lay in ashes having obviously disappeared behind the tall flames that must have engulfed it. Their home and their family evidently having fallen into ruin as the arsonist implements of destruction dissipated all memories, throwing them like caution to the four winds.
No need for the newly graduated doctors to ask each other questions; they knew the answers, they knew the cause of the devastation. Jean Paul docked the boat and when it was secured he held his cousin Magdalene in his arms as she cried from the bittersweet joy of coming home and the pain of seeing the wreckage. Both silently swearing vengeance and cursing all those whom caused their family’s devastation and their parents’ assumed demise.
The couple moved further inland, away from the shoreline and towards ephemeral visions of the long forgotten flames. The scandal and the memories to them had become smaller while living far away; eventually the gossip would also disappear from the mainlanders’ minds, but never from the family’s reality. And although not closely related, the distant cousins found themselves bound by the obligation of vindicating the soiled Van Damm family name.
"Think of this as a new beginning Maggie. Vengeance will be ours. " He whispered quite shyly and kissed her tenderly tasting the salty sea air laying politely on her asexual lips. They had knowledge of where the family probably retreated to and quietly made their way there.
After the couple located and reunited with their family in the catacombs underneath the family estate, they circumscribed a mission the likes of which no one had seen before. It was decided that the couple would soon be returning to the mainland, legally changing their names and carefully and artfully sinking their history and formulating the profile.
With their new identities in place, Phillip and Adrian Jones would give the world Section One, the most covert genetic laboratory in the planet, genetic engineering at its finest, in search of the perfect Van Damm male.
