"Do you have a doctor on the island now?" A question that was purposely asked by Michael to see if the information matched what he learned when he arrived. After all, the letter directed him to the island doctor.
Walter answered matter of factly, swallowing first. "No, no, we got a doctor on the island, a woman doctor at that." Michael wondered if the pony-tailed man was playing dumb or making up stuff.
"I see." Michael answered purposely stuffing food in his mouth so he would not have to say much. The earth shook a bit, as if someone was setting off explosions for excavation purposes. "What was that?"
"The Island sometimes settles itself, you’ll get used to it. Don’t worry about that." Walter said dismissivly and quickly changing the subject, then asking, "So how long do you plan to stay?"
Before Michael could answer the question the door of the pub burst opened with a gust of wind sweeping through the establishment and followed by the ferry boat Captain Marco O’Brian whose disheveled appearance signaled the imminent arrival of the storm. Walter spouted a jovial greeting, “Hey Marco what’s shakin’.”
Marco approached the table removing his Captain’s hat and holding it in his hands while addressing Michael while ignoring Walter’s greeting, “Excuse me sir, where you planning on staying on the island long?”
Michael glanced curiously at the Captain, and asked “Why, is there a problem?”
The Captain slightly embarrassed responded, “There is pretty bad storm coming in and my ferry will be the last ferryboat crossing either way, until the morning.”
Walter started to interject with a comment and Michael gave him a stern look and answered the Captain, “I had not planned on staying, when will the ferry depart.”
Marco answered, “As soon as possible sir, these storms roll in quickly, better safe than sorry.”
Michael rose reaching in his billfold to pay and exit with the Captain when Walter interjected again, “It’s on the house, you didn’t even finish eating and I enjoyed the company. By the way, leaving now with Marco is a very wise decision my boy.”
Once Walter was sure that Michael and O’Brian were out of hearing range he dialed his cell phone and after just one ring said, “Material has egressed.”
