Greetings from Winnipeg Canada! I have only recently gotten back into The Adventures of Long John Silver and I've always loved him in this role. I happened to find episodes on DVD and I'm telling my young kids about Long John, the reformed but mischievious and cantancorous pirate. Ever since I was a kid I had the same question as my kids. Did Robert Newton have one leg or did he tie it back. If he tied it back it must have been very uncomfortable. Since I have only seen his role as Long John I wouldn't know. As well, what happened to the other characters? Email me please. You have a great site! Thank you.

Robert Newton was in fact (to borrow from a hilarious Peter Cook/Dudley Moore sketch) "a two-legged man." Obviously, he had to tie his leg back, which I imagine was very uncomfortable. In fact, there've been a few scenes (maybe not in Treasure Island, but definitely in the Long John Silver series) where, when the lower part of his legs is off camera, he occasionally seems to have the suspicious gait of a person walking on two legs.

there's one part in TReasure Island where you can see his calf, it's the scene where he and Jim are in the kitchen onboard the ship and when Jim leaves to get the rum Long John offers the bottle to Captian Flint and in the bottom right hand corner you can see the back of his jeans. I was surprised that people even wore denim jeans back then.
