LOL, Jenny, yes, it's silly topic I know, but it's one of those things--once you notice it, you start seeing it everywhere! Hmm, maybe it does depend on the type of character he's playing. Since Sikes is such a nasty person, the elbow jab makes more sense for that character--and it's funny that Nancy does it to *him* ... maybe Kay Walsh picked it up from him, having worked with him before in "This Happy Breed." But again, it's not a totally unique mannerism; I just noticed that he does it a *lot*! I also noticed him doing the elbow-jab thing a few times in LJS as well, but I haven't seen it consistently enough to think to make a note of it. Now I'll be keeping an eye out for that too.
Hmm, here's a theory that could warrant more study (maybe one of us could use it for their doctoral thesis ;-)): Could it be that when he's playing a villain, he's more apt to use the elbow jab, and when he's playing a nice guy, he's more apt to use the arm whack?
So with "The Pink Pearl," it looks like we're now 6 for 6, Sue ... and counting! I'll be surprised now if we find an LJS episode where he doesn't do it! Like Jenny, we should also try watching some non-pirate films and try to spot him doing it there; that could be more of a challenge, although I'm *sure* I've seen him do it elsewhere. I think it just has to be a role where he's feeling chummy with someone as opposed to the villain. I'll bet "Night Boat to Dublin" will have a few! And I have a vague recollection of him doing it a few times in "The Beachcomber" as well; Elizabeth, that one sounds like a job for you, if you're very feeling human today (and I don't beat you to it)! ;-)
