Major Barbara; one of my favorite Robert Newton movies.
I first saw Major Barbara about 23 years back. I taped it off the Disney Channel, which at the time was a premium channel; no commercials. I also bought the prerecorded tape, which had just come out at about the same time, but the cable recording was actually the better quality of the two. I still have both, and I just converted my Disney recording to DVD, which gave me a chance to watch it again (TWICE in a row; the first DVD recording didn't take) after a longish time.
Back to the movie. I am not very good at this, but Major Barbara is, to my way of thinking, a very entertaining movie. Watching it again was great! We follow the hero, a dirt poor Greek scolar, and the heroine, an idealistic Salvation Army Major (and the granddaughter of an Earl), as they interact with first several Salvation Army converts (and a few non-converts), and later, as they visit Barbara's father's munitions factory. One of the characters they interact with is Bill Walker (Robert Newton), who comes to the shelter looking for his girlfriend Mog, a recent convert. RN mugs it op quite a bit as the deliciously low and despicable Bill, who starts out knocking down Jenny Hill (Deborah Kerr), one of the shelter helpers, and hitting an old women, one of the converts. A great role for RN; not a lead, but we get to see quite a bit of him, as he is changed by Major Barbara and company, though not in the way the Major had in mind.
Favorite RN quotes:
"Never mind my dear 'eart, 'ow 'bout my ribs?"
And a bit later:
"What price salvation now?"
