I have read Tuckers book and its in direct contrast to alot of what is published in the first book.
Take your pick. Lets face it when you are on a wooded hill with infantry you do not withdraw to an open plain while facing arty and cav. I agree with Phil in the idea thatLt Col Barrett wanted some political power back home now that the war is almost over. Here he is in the "backwater" of the war and he wants to make a splash for himself before its too late.
It was the 2nd Texas Cav (US) that the mexicans were taking potshots at. After the federals were in headlong retreat the 2nd TX Cav (US) was surrounded and was being butchered by Fords men. Some of the federals also tried to swim into Mexico. They were shot on the Mexican side the bodies stripped and then dumped back into the river.
The arty battery used by Rip Ford was a 6 gun battery of 12 pounders. They later sold this battery complete with forge and cassions to the French. Later the US demanded their return and eventually got the guns back.
