1860 Census Data for Members of CoB, 15th Texas

compiled by KC MacDonald

If you exclude probable duplications on the original list, 113 men served in Company B over the course of the war. I have been able to find good 1860 census data on 48 of them. Only ‘definites’ are included in this list (i.e. exact name matches with no other contenders for the soldiers identity). If I could get ages from the service records I could probably double the length of this list by eliminating identical named individuals.

On the basis of this data, it appears most of the company came from the Waco area (McLennan, Limestone, Falls, Coryell, Lampasas), but also from the Palestine recruitment area (Rusk, Houston Co.) and nearer to Dallas (Burleson). The others from farther afield are likely to be conscripts who were dragneted in from just about the entire state. This is an overwhelmingly rural company – out of the 48 in this sample only 4 came from towns! Most were born in the ‘Old South’, with a few Midwesterners, and one Irishman (I have dibs on this guy’s identity for my pard Richard Hale, who comes complete with authentic Irish accent and is the right age to boot!). Except where noted these guys were fairly poor (i.e. total worths of around $500), and on the basis of the valuations of their ‘moveable property’ only 3 look to have been large scale slave owners (they are noted in the text). As a rule the Farmers (who probably have 100 to 500 acres of land each) are wealthier than the Farm Labourers (who have nothing). Some of the Farmers may have owned one or two slaves.

Ps. When looking at the ages below, remember to add 4 years to get the correct age for the time of the Mansfield campaign.

Listed as:
Name, rank in/rank out, age in 1860, Place of Birth, Resident County in 1860 (if resident in town this is given in brackets after county), Occupation, marital status, number of children living with in 1860

Decision - do we want to assume the names of these men or are folks more comfortable with their given names?
