Gents,

I've seen several good posts go up so far with tips, advice, and techniques on how to keep one's body safe from our comrades in the insect world.

One item not yet mentioned is permithrin. A post about this stuff on the old AC board a good year and a half back really got me thinking about how dangerous tick bites (among others) can be in terms of long-term illnesses. Yes, those sorts of things are very rare but there's no sense in falling victim to the percentage. The gentleman that posted the information suffers from Lyme disease and is badly dibilitated as a result. He contracted it through a tick bite gained on a relic dig in the woods. Permithrin is available at Wal Mart and just about any outdoor center worth its salt. The stuff I buy is in a blue can with an orange lid. NOTE- you DO NOT put this stuff on you directly. Rather, it is applied to your clothes. Give an extra spray around the cuffs, waist, neckline, etc of your garments. Put it on several days before the event. The stuff lasts several weeks and can be used through several events if they should happen to fall that closely together. DEET, although widely popular, doesn't do much to keep critters, particularly ticks, at bay. It probably doesn't hurt but I want to urge with every bit of seriousness that you take the simple, cheap, and added step of treating your uniform and underclothes with permithrin. The stuff is odorless so you won't smell like a can of Deep Woods Off for the whole weekend either.

I used the stuff prior to TAG last October and had zero insect problems. We were up pretty close to Ft. Campbell, KY in prime bug territory so to come out with no bites or clingers was a real nice thing.

So, add that to your list of preparatory steps. Seriously boys, go shell out $3 or $4 for some of this stuff and add that extra bit of protection.

Two weeks to go men! Keep getting yourselves in shape and if you can think of a few more comrades to pull into the ranks get them signed up. This is going to be a fantastic experience.

Kind regards,

Fred Baker
