Subject: Drill Stuff

Boys at a minimum we are going to be doing the following as a battalion on the field. We are 3 companies so it won't take long to deploy...nor will we be doing anything as divisions. No echoing of commands by NCO's. If I lose my voice I will have the 1st Sgt bellow.

The manual we are using is Revised Hardees (1862) and that includes the "swing" method of stacking.

Dress parade and inspection
Right or left wheel into column (from line into column of companies faced to right or left)
By company into line (form column of companies from column of fours)
Right into line (by company - form a line to the right from a column of companies)
Left into line wheel (form a line to the left from a column of companies)
Forward into line (form line forward via left or right half wheels)
By the right of companies to the front or rear (pass obstacles - each company in column)
Change front forward on the first company (fast way to get us facing another way in line)
Deploy skirmishers
Rally and recall skirmishers
Guard mount (there will be a guard and picket on Saturday night)

If I want the company to face right or left and not double I will use "In two ranks, right face".

Remember to always right dress without being asked - if the front rank is dressed, the rear rank merely covers their file partner at 13 inches.

Follow your guides - remember that in column of companies right in front the guide is normally left.

When counting off, don't let the Yankees hear you, just the men around you.

Keep your proper distance in column

Charge bayonets will be at port arms until we get close and then the front rank only will drop their weapons into place

I probably forgot beaucoup here but the good Sgts will no doubt load up my in basket with stuff shortly
