Subject: 6th/15th Texas Info and other sordid tidbits

Gents,

Most of you may recall our good comrade Dusty Lind from the preservation march. Dusty is a member of Co K, 6th Texas Infantry, a good group of boys based in and around San Antonio. At Red River Battalion events, those guys form a seperate company along with the 4 standing companies of the 9th Texas (collectively known as the RRB). At any rate, another member of the 6th is a gentleman named Dan Snell who has done a good bit of research on the unit. Dan was kind enough to share some things with me that I am passing along with his permission. Here goes:
"The 6th was consolidated with the 15th, but my research has been mostly for the 6th. I can provide casualties for both the 6th and 15th. I can provide the amount of men that went into the battle from the 6th only by company and by regiment. I know the names and ranks of all the men who likely were in the battle from the 6th but not form the 15th. Therefore, even though we fly under the banner of 6th and 15th for the reenactment, we should consider forming up as the six original companies of the 6th Texas, for which we have detailed information on. Let me know your thoughts and that of the Colonel.
Although the 6th and 15th were consolidated, they maintained themselves separate within the regiment. That is the 6th consolidated their companies into six of the ten companies of the regiment and the 15 consolidated their companies in the other four. Therefore they each maintained their own officers and NCOs, except for the Regimental Commander which was the senior officer of the 6th or the 15th combined. At Franklin, the senior officer was Major Rhodes Fisher from the 6th and he commanded the consolidated regiment. The two regiments mustered separately from one another and maintained their own commanding officers.
After consolidation of the 6th and 15th in March 1864, the 6th Texas formed the following six consolidated companies for one battalion within the consolidated regiment:
Company A-K
Company B-H
Company C
Company D
Company E-F
Company G

The 15th consolidated their companies for one battalion within the regiment as follows:
Company A-F
Company B-G-H
Company C-I
Company D-E-K
There is no evidence that they renamed their companies. They seemed to have maintained their original company designations within the consolidated companies. The senior officer within the consolidated companies commanded the company.
Obviously there were fewer men in each company as a whole in the 15th than in the 6th, hence the necessity of consolidation as many as three companies into one.
I will need to get back with you on the numerical breakdown of each company. As far as the clothing goes, we do not have the desired information, I am afraid, but we can surmize that the unit was fairly well equipped because of the time it had prior to departing Georgia for Tennessee. I will, search through my records more carefully to see if anything further can be provided.
Lets communicate again shortly.
You may be surprised to know the exact number of men in the sixth at Franklin was somewhere around 125. So it is very concievable that we could field the battalion to a man. I will have the exact numbers in each company probably within two or three weeks."

Essentially, I believe that we will meet or exceed the number of men present within the 6th Texas (not including the four companies of the 15th which were consolidated into the regiment) for Franklin. That is VERY cool and rarely done. Once Dan gets a numerical breakdown by company we can see if we can organize 6 companies to the man in strength. Should we wind up with more men we can give berth to a 7th company.

Here's a few more facts. One, we know the RRB has 4 standing companies, companies F-I. The 6th Texas boys compose Company K. At present, two companies are being formed, primarily from the rank and file of the Mansfield battalion. As it stands, we have a core of returners from that effort, succored by some respectable groups from the Lazy Jacks and CHAP's so we may already be about company strength. Lastly, to add to the realism, the entire battalion will take part in a casualty draw, set presently for Saturday morning at the event. We will recreate the total numbers of killed, wounded, and captured to a man.

Exciting prospects with this boys. Glad to have you all on board.

Kindly,

Fred Baker
