You bring those skinny little soccer players, tennis players, or basketball players out on the feild and have them run around the field with percussion instruments, tubas, or bari saxes: See if THEY can do it -- and make sure they PLAY IN TUNE while playing every single note with perfect tone, pitch, rhythm, and style!!!!! (notice I never mentioned the football players...)

My point is simple. What we do on the feild during half time is at least ten and a half times more complicated than what the athletes are doing. Granted, it takes skill to run a touchdown, shoot a free-throw, or kick a ball across the field -- but we have to play various instruments, think about so many little details, AND march around the field without getting out of breath. Because of all the basic things we need to do just to survive out there on the field, we should at least get 1 credit hour towards gym class - maybe 7.

Musicians never get enough credit for marching in a band. I bet those jocks can't even tell you how to march around a corner without falling apart --- "Hey man, what's a straight line do when it gits around a corner....?"

Whether or not this will benefit the marching band is hard to say. If the school is small enough that it needs more people in the marching band, than it'll probably be a good idea to offer credit for marching band. If it's a bigger school, then I don't know why we'd even bother letting other people in just to get a gym credit out of the way.

Besides, I think people in the marching band should be concert band memebers only. If the school keeps it that way and just wants to give the music students extra gym credit, that's great; but I wouldn't necessarily open it up to the entire school.

Hope that helps... I think it's a great idea to get extra credit for marching, but I'd be a little hesitant opening it up to the entire student population for fear of getting people that aren't interested in marching or music because they just want the credit.

I totally agree. It definitely should be counted as a gym credit, especially if you are in a show style marching band. In the marching band I came from you had to be in shape to do everything that was expected of you, from high step marching, dancing, and swagger. I agree with derek though in which i don't think that random people can just jump in and try to play an instrument just to be in the marching band unless they are going to take lessons. I also suppose it is up to the head of the music department at the school if they are willing to take that risk because it sounds like that should be able to say yes or no to this.
