"One-of-a-kind center to be home-base to Civil War historians"

On any given weekend, somewhere in America, men, women and children don wool and homespun fabrics and literally bring history to life as Civil War reenactors. One of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States today is that of reenacting the American Civil War; a hobby that’s gained a new respect at a time that our nation is again at war, however, not with each other.
To further that popular pastime, Beaumont Ranch in Grandview, TX is pleased to announce the opening of the Civil War Center of Texas (CWCT) at Beaumont Ranch, which will cater to reenactors as well as everyone interested in the history of the American Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865.
“We are thrilled to be a part of this new endeavor,” stated Linda Beaumont, owner of Beaumont Ranch in Grandview, 30 miles south of Ft. Worth. “We (Beaumont Ranch) have long wanted to expand our involvement in American history reenactments and the formation of the CWCT will make that possible.
“We are also excited about the arrival of Kathy Smith, of Granbury, to Beaumont Ranch, who will serve as director for the Civil War Center of Texas. Kathy is a long-time civil war reenactment coordinator and living historian and brings a wealth of knowledge of this type of event with her.”
Beaumont Ranch, a multi-use facility in Johnson County, features an authentic 1800s Western town, complete with unique shops and several B&B rooms. Also, in addition to the numerous events held at Beaumont Ranch, is a Civil War reenactment in March. (See accompanying article) Under the organization of the CWCT, another Civil War reenactment will take place the first weekend in October annually.
The CWCT will offer monthly seminars and programs that will cover a wide range of topics, which will be available to the public, but be of special interest to reenactors, Civil War buffs and living historians, as well as American history educators on all levels.
Among the topics scheduled for 2006 are: Campfire Cooking, Songs of the Civil War, and Genealogy and Civil War Research.
“We also have an exciting weekend planned for families in June,” says Smith. “The kids will enjoy learning about toys and games of the 1860s, while moms will learn ‘Clothing Ins and Outs.’ We’ll offer dads a ‘Firearms of the Period’ class, even though it’ll be open to any moms that don’t want dad to have a ‘blast’ without them!”
The CWCT is in the process of obtaining their 501c.3 non-profit status and plans are underway for the CWCT to host educational field trips for area schools.
The center will host a Civil War period ball January 28 at Beaumont Ranch, which will be open to anyone in period attire. The event is a fund-raiser for amenities that will be needed during the reenactment in March.
“There is a definite need for a center like this in Texas for the Civil War enthusiasts,” Smith explained. “There’s not another organization of its kind like it in the whole State of Texas. We want to make this home to the thousands of Civil War historians and reenactors in Texas as well as those in our neighboring states.
“The Civil War was a pivotal time in our nation’s history; so much can be learned from its study,” added Smith. “It is our goal at the CWCT that we enable all participants and visitors to not only read about this history, but to live it as well.”
