Old City Park, the Historical Village of Dallas presents the
1860 Academy of The Civilian
May 1, 2004 ~ 8 AM to 4:30 PM

Come enjoy a day of living history lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on classes covering a variety of social topics related to daily life in Texas,
1855 to 1865, at Texas premier Living History Museum. Multiple tracks of classes are being offered during the day. Some hands-on sessions may have limited enrollment with sign up sheets at morning check-in.

The final class list includes-

• Calicos to Furbelows- Women’s fashions on
the Texas frontier, 1840-1870, analyzed through period accounts
• The Texas household- Goods, Supplies, and Furnishings 1855-1865
• Weddings in the 19th Century
• Pickled, Potted, Smoked and Salted - Food Preservation in
the Antebellum South
• Woman’s Work is Never Done: Duties of an Anti-Bellum Housewife
• Black powder weapons- period fire-power and modern care & safety
• Advanced development of first-person impressions- techniques and sources
• An introduction to basic blacksmithing- tools, techniques, & terms (demo)
• An Introduction to hand-spinning (hands-on)
• Hair Today, Chignon Tomorrow- Period styles and modern hair (hands on)
• No Idle Hands - Period knitting and reading published patterns (hands on)
• Heart of the Home- An introduction to open-hearth cooking in the Antebellum home (hands-on)

Pre-registration is required by Tuesday, April 27, 2004.
The cost is $35.00 per person, with a $5.00 discount for Old City Park members.
Registration includes a boxed lunch and a notebook of all class handouts.
All participants are invited to witness a period wedding ceremony at 2 PM.

Old City Park, the Village of Dallas is a 13-acre living history site located, off of I-30 in downtown Dallas at
1717 Gano St. Old City Park is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Additional information about Old City Park and the 1860 Academy of the Civilian is available at www.oldcitypark.org .
