You are really on the right track with this. You are using the auditory-to-visual approach, which takes care of blending, sequencing, retrieval, and auditory discrimination. You circumvent blending by spelling, by taking the letters apart instead of blending (folding the letters into each other). Your boxes take care of sequencing. The objects are visual, at the recognition level, so your child doesn't have to retrieve the letter-sound. (Retrieval and sequencing are so difficult for dyslexic children.) And, if you have only one vowel on the table, no need for auditory discrimination. I have found it very helpful to use mnemonic picture letters for this kind of activity. You already know how this kind of activity gets the children involved and increases their confidence.
