Y'all,
Eight weeks to go! I'm sure most of you are aware of how to prepare for these events, but rather than have anyone say "I didn't know..." here goes.
1) Start walking NOW! If you are not used to walking much, it will be much more difficult for you once you past the first couple miles, not to mention the second day. If you can, wear your brogans as much as possible on your walks to get used to them. Figure out how much weight you want to carry, and take it on your walks with you. We'd rather have you complain that the march was not as hard as you were told, than loose you to a sag wagon because you weren't prepared.
2) Start drinking loads of water. Try to drink at least 8 glasses a day to give your body time to absorb it prior to the event. I also recommend laying off the soda, beer, etc. It will only dehydrate you, and that's exactly what we're not looking for. I usually switch to a water only rule a month prior to the event and it works fine for me. Your mileage may vary.
3) Take care of your shoes. Neatsfoot oil can be found at your local tack shop. I used it prior to Port Gibson, and my brogans are now quite comfortable.
4) Order your socks now. I reccomend one pair cotton knit (Mickey Black $9 a pair) under one pair wool knit (evergreen acres, Karin Timour, Mrs. Lind, not sure on pricing.) Also have a change for the second day.
5) Try to work marches into your next couple events for a "full dress rehearsal". This will help you identify probable trouble spots with your gear and give you time to rectify it.
These are all simple rules, and they've been proven time and time again. I was on the Port Gibson march last May with quite a few of you, if anyone has anything to add for those who haven't done this type of event before, please chime in!!!!
There is a BIG difference between a 15 mile march and a 3 mile march at a national or some other event; let's start preparing now so that all of us make it to the fight at Pleasant Hill!
Regards,
Stephen Mitchell
