I think this was a big test for Ethan, of sorts.
Like he said himself, not that long ago he was in the closet and hated himself for being gay.
It took meeting Drew to make him realize that whatever might come his way, homophobes included, is worth it, cause Drew is worth it.
It makes it even clearer when Drew is trying to pull back to protect Ethan, and Ethan is fighting even harder to save them.
