Episode 8 : Fallen Angel
TEASER
EXT: A Typical Dark Alley in NYC
The camera screeches over the rooftops showing the city’s famous landmarks before nose-diving down into the alley – which, just as most dark alleys are, is dank and reeking of excrement. Two people are fighting – a man dressed entirely in white is one of them. He appears to be in his thirties and has carefully gelled blond hair spiked up. Despite the mankyness of his surroundings his clothes remain completely spotless. His opponent has long hair and is a lot smaller than he is and he clearly has the upper-hand. He lashes out with one punch that connects and sends his assailant through the air and against the cold stone wall of the surrounding building. He walks towards his opponent who is slowly trying to rise from the ground through the pain of impact. The man in white speaks, with an accent that suggests no particular country.
MAN
And this is what it comes down to. Through the will of God I have beaten you down. But do not worry child, for soon the pain will stop and you will be in the Kingdom and he will forgive you for your sins. But first, I must cleanse you.
He approaches the figure on the ground and reaches down and grabs tries to grab a handful of hair but the figure kicks him hard in the stomach sending him over onto his ass. The figure slowly looks up at him and reveals herself to be Kayla. She is bleeding profusely and has obviously been badly battered.
KAYLA
You’re going to have to catch me first you sonnuvabitch.
She sprints off down the alley and onto the street. The man slowly stands up and dusts himself off.
MAN
I will not chase you child, for it would be a needless use of my energy. Like all sinners your time will come and you will answer to the Good Lord. But obviously, that will not be today. (beat) But it shall be soon.
CUT TO:
INT: Some Coffee Shop (On Long Island)
Spike and Faith sit eating lunch. We can see the car parked outside the window. They are both in hysterics as Spike recounts an old story.
SPIKE
And so Angel turns to me and says: (Spike puts on a really bad Irish accent and slurs his speech to indicate that Angelus was somewhat intoxicated at the time) “You know, I coulda sworn we left the giraffe here”.
They both burst into tears of laughter for a good while before slowly coming round.
FAITH
We should get moving.
SPIKE
Yeah.
She stares at him for a moment.
FAITH
Well….
SPIKE
What?
FAITH
It’s your turn to pay.
SPIKE
No it’s not.
FAITH
Yeah it is.
SPIKE
No, it’s not. I paid last time.
FAITH
You did not.
SPIKE
I did to.
FAITH
Spike.
He looks at her for a second.
SPIKE
Fine.
As he gets up to pay his phone rings. He pulls it out of his pocket and looks at the screen “KAYLA”. He throws the phone to Faith.
SPIKE
Kayla. Speak to her will you?
FAITH
Fine.
She flips the phone open.
FAITH
Kayla, hello…. It’s Faith…. What do you mean who? Faith, the vampire slayer….yeah, oh….. No he’s busy….. Well you can talk to me. What is it?.... Long Island why?..............Right, OK. We’ll be there in a couple of hours. Hang tight. Bye.
Spike walks back over.
SPIKE
What did she want?
FAITH
Help.
SPIKE
What did you tell her?
FAITH
That she had it. Come on blondie, we’re hittin’ the Big Apple again.
SPIKE
New York. It’s a hell of a town.
FAITH
Damn straight.
Faith walks out and Spike follows behind swinging his jacket over his shoulder in one of those kickass made for the credits shots that has the camera at about knee level panning up.
END OF TEASER
ACT 1
INT: Kayla’s Apartment
Kayla sits on her bed flicking through the channels when suddenly the door flies off of the hinges and lands on the floor. She quickly spins round – startled, as the person who kicked it in walks in.
KAYLA
Spike! What the hell’d you do that for?
SPIKE
Thought it would be funny.
FAITH
Kinda was. (to Spike) Ironic really.
SPIKE
What?
FAITH
You’ve only been here twice and that’s the second time you’ve done that.
KAYLA
Yeah, and you’re paying for it this time to.
Faith lies down on the bed and Spike goes over to the wicker chair in the corner and dumps the clothes from it onto the floor. He picks up a thong and holds it up.
KAYLA
Grow up.
Spike throws it on top of Faith – who quickly grabs it away and throws it off of herself – although she over throws it and it goes out the window.
CUT TO:
EXT: Alley
A homeless man sees it land in front of him. He smiles a huge smile before picking it up and shoving it into his pocket.
CUT TO:
INT: Kayla’s Apartment
KAYLA
Oh great. Thank you so much for that.
Spike sits down into the chair.
SPIKE
So what do you so desperately need our help with?
FAITH
Yeah. We were about to go ice-skating when you rudely interrupted us.
SPIKE
We bloody well were not. (to Kayla) That’s not true. I don’t ice-skate.
KAYLA
I don’t really care whether you do or not.
FAITH
Ok, seriously though. What’s the deal?
KAYLA
New badass in town.
SPIKE
Big bad or little bad?
KAYLA
That remains to be seen. All I know is that he kicked my ass badly last night. My various sources have been able to give me pieces of back-story but I don’t got it fully formed yet.
FAITH
What have you got?
KAYLA
The guy calls himself The Apostle, claims to be a Fallen Angel – and believe me, we aren’t talking Christopher Daniels, this guys much more hardcore.
SPIKE
Whose Chris Daniels?
KAYLA
Nevermind, anyway, this guys strong – really strong – and he has it in for Slayers.
FAITH
Who doesn’t?
KAYLA
True. But not many of them claim to be doing God’s work by killing us.
FAITH
He what?
KAYLA
God’s work. Claims that the slayer line is an affront to God but that as long as he cleanses us before he kills us we will be welcome in the Kingdom.
SPIKE
What does he mean by cleanse?
KAYLA
I didn’t stick around to find out.
FAITH
So what is he? Vampire? Demon?
KAYLA
I don’t know what he is? Just kind of hoping he’s not a real angel.
FAITH
Seems unlikely.
SPIKE
Everything we do seems unlikely.
KAYLA
So we got a plan?
FAITH
First thing we need to do is find him.
KAYLA
How do you intend to do that.
Faith shakes her head and exhales in a “I dunno” kind of a way.
FAITH
Wait. This guy was after you last night right?
KAYLA
Yeah.
FAITH
And you got away?
KAYLA
No, he’s brutally torturing me as we speak. Of course I got away.
FAITH
(to Spike) You thinking what I’m thinking.
SPIKE
I think so.
KAYLA
What? What are we thinking?
SPIKE
Good news princess – you’re bait.
KAYLA
I think I hate this plan. I just barely got away from him last time.
FAITH
It’s all cool – we’ll have your back this time.
KAYLA
Oh that reassures me so much. No offence guys – but I think I’d feel safer if Bluntman and Chronic had my back.
SPIKE
Who’re Bluntman and Chronic?
CUT TO:
EXT: Street
Kayla walks along – arms wrapped around herself to fend off the cold.
KAYLA
I still really hate this plan.
She looks over her right shoulder to the other side of the street where we see Faith a few yards behind. Faith looks up and we see Spike walking rooftop to rooftop on Kayla’s side of the street. Kayla turns back round to face the front and is faced by The Apostle.
THE APOSTLE
Perhaps tonight is your time child.
Kayla throws a punch but she is swiped into the wall. Spike dives off of the roof feet first – he’s about to hit The Apostle’s chest with his feet but The Apostle grabs his shins and spins him hard into the wall. When he turns back round to where Kayla is he’s greeted by Faith instead who punches him in the face. He reels slightly and is hit by Kayla. They hit him with a barrage of punches each then Faith hits him with a spin kick to the face while Kayla hits a low spin kick to the back of his shins and he crashes to the ground in slow motion. Faith brings her sword hard down into his chest but the blade shatters.
He nips up and punches Faith knocking her down. He then turns round and hits Kayla clean across the street and through the window of an electronic goods shop setting off the alarm.
Spike clambers back up and throws a punch but it is blocked. Spike continues trying to hit him but he keeps blocking until he finally kicks Spike hard between the legs and Spike goes flying up into the air landing hard on the roof he dropped down from.
The Apostle struts towards Faith who lies on the ground looking up at him. As he leans over her she kicks out at him but he grabs her leg and pulls her up grabbing her throat in his hand as he does so and slams her hard against the brick wall – causing dust to fly out into the air from the impact. He lets Faith slide to the ground- she is in too much pain to stand.
THE APOSTLE
If I’m not mistaken – you’re her. Aren’t you? You’re Faith.
FAITH
I am.
THE APOSTLE
You fascinate me so much more than the others. Even the original – even Buffy. Do you know why Faith?
FAITH
Because of my name.
THE APOSTLE
Precisely. Come, we have much to talk about.
He kicks her hard in the face knocking her head against the wall and rendering her unconscious. He picks her up and walks down the street.
We see Kayla climb out of the window – obviously in a great deal of pain. She hears the sirens coming to investigate the alarms and so bolts across the street and begins to climb up onto the roof Spike is on.
END OF ACT 1
ACT 2
INT : Kayla’s Apartment
We see the door propped up diagonally against the doorframe. We see a hand appear on each side as the door is lifted out of the way and Kayla and Spike step through. As you can probably imagine Spike is walking with a pretty brutal limp. He throws himself down on the wicker chair. Kayla steps into the kitchen and appears back with two ice packs. She throws one to Spike who shoves it down his trousers.
SPIKE
Good job I wasn’t planning on children.
KAYLA
At least you have super-strength. Would’ve been worse if you didn’t.
SPIKE
I think you’ll find kid, that if a bloke gets kicked 60ft into the air by the bollocks then it doesn’t really matter if he has super-strength or not.
They’re both quiet for a moment.
SPIKE
We stay here for 10 minutes tops. We need to find her.
KAYLA
It won’t be easy.
SPIKE
I thought you said you could tell roughly where he was going?
KAYLA
Well, yeah.
SPIKE
Then I’ll sniff Faith out.
KAYLA
Ewww. Gross.
SPIKE
Grow up.
They’re quiet again.
SPIKE
Anyway – even if I can’t, you know this town better than anyone else. You know the rough area you’ll know where he’s likely to be in it.
KAYLA
And for the majority of this town that’d be true.
SPIKE
There’s a “but” coming.
KAYLA
There is. (beat) He took her into gang land. I don’t know it.
SPIKE
Why not?
KAYLA
I deal with fangs not guns.
SPIKE
What? So you’re not willing to go help her?
KAYLA
Oh, I’ll help her. But in order to get likely locations we’re talking sources of sources sources. You know what I mean?
SPIKE
Just barely. We need to find her quick though. I hate to think what he’s doing to her.
CUT TO:
INT: Loft Room
Faith is sitting propped up against a pillar – her hands cuffed round the back of it. She slowly regains consciousness. We see that the room has a large roof space – with plently of rafters. The floor is wooden and there are wood carvings all around. The only entrance to the room is through a trap door. The Apostle sits at a wooden table – sharpening metal knifes and a variety of other metal objects.
THE APOSTLE
You’re awake.
FAITH
Guess so. Where is this?
THE APOSTLE
I’d prefer not to tell you.
FAITH
Why? You’re going to kill me anyway.
THE APOSTLE
True. But despite my status as a divine being I have seen James Bond movies and I do realise that telling you even the tiniest detail could end in tragedy for myself.
FAITH
Oh good, you’re funny.
THE APOSTLE
Now I sense a tad of sarcasm in your voice.
FAITH
Let me guess. It’s an affront to God.
THE APOSTLE
Not at all. The Lord himself was actually the first person to use it. I remember it well. It was in the Garden of Eden just after Adam bit into the apple and the Lord appeared to him. Adam claimed that Eve made him do it – which, in fairness, turned out to be true – and the Lord responded – “Oh yeah, and next your going to tell me she made you have intercourse with that sheep”. We all laughed for days over that quip.
FAITH
You’re trying to tell me that Adam had sex with a sheep but it was because he ate the apple they were thrown out.
THE APOSTLE
Well you see – God had prohibited Adam and Eve from the eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge – but he hadn’t prohibited intercourse with the animals. That came after Adam did it.
FAITH
Fascinating. Look, if you’re going to kill me can you do it quick so I don’t need to hear anymore Bible stories for the deranged.
THE APOSTLE
I’m afraid that you’re going to have to wait a while for death. You have to be cleansed first.
FAITH
Why?
THE APOSTLE
Because it’s the only thing that will keep you out of hell.
CUT TO:
EXT: Street
Spike and Kayla walk along until they come to the edge of the gang territory. Spike still has a bad limp. He suddenly stops short.
KAYLA
What is it?
SPIKE
I’ve got a scent I recognise.
KAYLA
Faith?
SPIKE
No.
KAYLA
Who then?
SPIKE
I don’t know. I know the scent but I can’t remember who it belongs to.
KAYLA
Is it human?
SPIKE
I think so.
He walks away from Kayla and then looks down towards a manhole cover.
SPIKE
Down there.
He walks towards it and bends down to lift it.
KAYLA
Spike we’re kinda busy you know?
SPIKE
Whoever this person is they’re near gang land. Suggests to me that they might know it.
KAYLA
Yeah. And it also might be a corpse.
SPIKE
Smells fresh.
KAYLA
Look, I’m not going into the sewers. End of story.
Spike drops down. He yells back up.
SPIKE
Hurry up.
Kayla gets a look of disgust on her face and then follows anyway.
CUT TO:
INT: Sewer Tunnels
Spike limps off in front with Kayla bringing up the rear. A look of great disgust on her face.
KAYLA
This is totally ruining my new shoes.
SPIKE
Grow up.
KAYLA
It reeks down here. What’s that smell?
SPIKE
Sewage.
KAYLA
What?!?
SPIKE
You’re in the sewers, what did you expect?
KAYLA
Not to be in the sewers for one.
SPIKE
The scents getting stronger.
KAYLA
(sarcastically) Oh really?
SPIKE
The scent I’m tracking.
KAYLA
Oh. You know you seem strangely at home down here.
SPIKE
Yeah, well, former vampire. How do think I got about during the day?
KAYLA
Never really gave it much thought if I’m being totally honest.
SPIKE
Well now you know.
He stops and turns and stares at the wall.
SPIKE
Here.
KAYLA
That’s a solid brick wall.
SPIKE
There’s something behind it.
KAYLA
A corpse?
SPIKE
I told you – it smells fresh.
KAYLA
Well then maybe it’s a fresh corpse. Look all we’re doing is wasting time down here. We should be looking for Faith.
SPIKE
Yeah. (beat) You’re right. Let’s go.
He turns to leave when suddenly the brick wall slides open and someone steps out. We only see him from the back as we see Spike’s reaction.
SPIKE
Oh. It’s you.
END OF ACT 2
ACT 3
INT: The Sewers
We see who Spike was talking to. It’s Tap (see Episode 2: Compound Interest).
TAP
Spike. What’re you doing here?
SPIKE
Same could be said to you. I thought you were travelling the country – keeping your head down.
TAP
Figured I had less chance of being caught right beneath their noses.
KAYLA
Eh, Spike?
SPIKE
Yeah?
KAYLA
Whose this guy?
SPIKE
Oh right, Kayla Tap, Tap Kayla.
TAP
Hey. You never told me why you’re here.
SPIKE
Faith’s been snatched by some guy – we were going to look for her when I picked up your scent. Didn’t know who it was.
TAP
She’s in gang territory?
KAYLA
Yeah.
TAP
She was taken by a gang?
SPIKE
No. Some guy claiming to be a Fallen Angel.
TAP
Oh him.
KAYLA
What do you mean oh him?
TAP
Yous should come in.
Spike and Kayla look at one another and then follow him in as the wall closes up behind them.
CUT TO:
INT: Loft Room
The Apostle continues to sharpen his implements.
FAITH
And why would I go to hell?
THE APOSTLE
Because you are an affront to God.
FAITH
You know, you keep saying that but you’ve yet to back it up. Care to explain it.
THE APOSTLE
It is true that understanding leads to acceptance, so yes I will explain. You are an affront to God because you slay vampires.
FAITH
That makes me an affront to God?
THE APOSTLE
It does.
FAITH
OK? I think I speak for the world when I say huh?
THE APOSTLE
I didn’t think you’d understand.
FAITH
Well you didn’t explain very clearly.
THE APOSTLE
I’ll start at the beginning then.
FAITH
Good plan.
THE APOSTLE
In the beginning there was God and he was the symbol of good. But good was all there was. Then suddenly Adam and Eve, at the will of Lucifer in the form of the serpent, bit into the fruit and innocence was destroyed. Without innocence, the idea of goodness was worthless, the idea of God was worthless, so Lucifer was banished to hell and evil was created. Without evil there would be no good. That is why there are vampires, that is why there are demons – because without them, God’s existence would be meaningless. Do you see why that makes what you do an affront to Him? With every demon you kill, or vampire you slay you are driving the knife into the back of your creator and He cannot allow that to stand. However, he understands that you believe yourself to be doing good and that you are only doing what you have been guided to do. So you will not go to hell. There is a place for you in the Kingdom, after you have been cleansed.
FAITH
You’re insane.
THE APOSTLE
If it is insane to do the work of ones God, then I am guilty of that charge.
CUT TO:
INT: Tap’s Sewer Home
Spike, Kayla and Tap stand around. For a room in a sewer it actually looks alright. There is a lot of electrical equipment around.
KAYLA
How do you get the power for this stuff down here?
TAP
I tapped into the surrounding power lines.
KAYLA
You can do that?
TAP
How do you think I got my name?
KAYLA
I can’t even remember your name.
TAP
Oh. Right. Fine.
SPIKE
So you know this guy we’re looking for?
TAP
Yeah.
SPIKE
How?
TAP
Well truth be told, ever since I got out of the Compound I’ve kinda been obsessed with vampires and demons and the like. Taking out as many as I can but mostly just collecting information on the higher profile ones in the City.
He indicates a filing cabinet. Kayla opens the top drawer and puls out a file and flicks through it.
KAYLA
Matthew Broderick’s a Lenger Demon?
TAP
Yeah. And you should see the pic of Sarah Jessica in her true form.
Kayla obviously does and recoils in shock.
TAP
Anyway, this Fallen Angel dude appeared a few weeks ago and started making waves straight away so I did my research and this is what I found.
He hands Spike the file.
TAP
The guys real name is Christof Tomasson. He’s a Dane. Won a Noble Prize for Physics – something pretty hardcore involving something or other. Can never remember the sciencey names. But that’s not the weird part.
KAYLA
What’s the weird part?
SPIKE
He won it in the fifties.
KAYLA
Oh.
SPIKE
So what happened?
TAP
Shortly after he won the prize he disappeared. Didn’t show up again until this year when he went on his rampage. Best I can tell, Faith’ll be his twentieth slayer in four months.
KAYLA
How’d he go from scientist to slayer killer.
TAP
From what I can gather he’s possessed.
SPIKE
By what?
TAP
I truly don’t know. I mean (laughs to himself) it could even be a real angel.
KAYLA
Don’t even joke.
Spike pulls a piece of paper out of the folder.
SPIKE
This his address?
TAP
Yeah.
SPIKE
Let’s go get her? (to Tap) Coming?
TAP
I go anywhere near there I’ll get shot.
SPIKE
Fair enough. Thanks for the help.
TAP
No problem. And good luck.
SPIKE
Thanks.
Spike and Kayla walk out the way they came in.
KAYLA
He’s cute.
SPIKE
He’s a murderer.
KAYLA
Pobody’s nerfect.
SPIKE
Don’t even think about it.
KAYLA
Aww, your getting all big brother on me.
SPIKE
Don’t even joke.
KAYLA
Fair enough. C’mon – let’s go get big sis then.
END OF ACT 3
ACT 4
INT: Loft Room
The Apostle continues to sharpen his weapons.
THE APOSTLE
Do you know how many slayer’s I have killed Faith?
FAITH
I don’t want to.
THE APOSTLE
19. (beat) But you didn’t know any of them.
FAITH
That’s meant to comfort me?
THE APOSTLE
Perhaps not. But I thought it might help you to know that I’m not just doing this on a whim.
FAITH
It doesn’t.
THE APOSTLE
Do you know I can name every slayer on this planet? There’s you, Kayla, Buffy (of course), Rona, Kennedy, Caridad, Vi. And then there are the ones you don’t know – Isobella in Italy, Frazzle from Sydney, Abby from Edinburgh, Katrine from Bordeaux. Names you don’t actually know but yet names you are bound to. In life and in death.
He approaches her – knife in hand.
THE APOSTLE
And death will come soon.
He stabs her in the side, avoiding the major organs. She lets out a scream.
THE APOSTLE
Yes, scream. Release the evil from your body.
SPIKE
Something you’ll never be able to do, Christof.
He turns round to see Spike and Kayla standing behind him – weapons in hand.
THE APOSTLE
You speak a name you do not understand. There is no Christof. He is dead.
SPIKE
Oh good. Then I can kill you without any guilt.
THE APOSTLE
You can try.
Just as he says that Faith pulls herself up and kicks him towards Spike.
SPIKE (to Kayla)
Free her.
Spike throws The Apostle across the other side of the room.
THE APOSTLE
You have gained strength since last time.
SPIKE
I know my enemy now. And I’m bloody well pissed off with him too.
Kayla runs over to Faith.
KAYLA
You OK?
FAITH
Been better.
KAYLA
Lean forward.
She does and Kayla swings the axe snapping the handcuffs.
FAITH
Go – help him.
Kayla runs towards the fight just as Spike is thrown up into the rafters. She swings her axe at the Apostle but he bends back to avoid it and then grabs the wooden handle and spins Kayla around by it – causing her to let go and slide across the floor. He then pounces up onto the rafters.
SPIKE
I see we’re taking this to a whole new level.
THE APOSTLE
Quite.
The Apostle jumps over onto the rafter Spike is on swinging the axe but Spike jumps the other way. Both wobble as they land.
SPIKE
Just like Gladiators.
The Apostle swings the axe low and Spike jumps it and lands on the same rafter as him. They are both standing side on and begin to battle. Spike lands a hard punch and the Apostle flies up and lands on another rafter. Spike follows. Spike swings another punch but misses and is thrown to the floor.
THE APOSTLE
I cannot be defeated.
FAITH
Let’s wait and see.
He turns to see Faith standing right next to him. She punches him hard and he lands on another rafter. Kayla is waiting for him. She swings but he blocks and grabs her by the arm but she pulls up and runs along the ceiling with her feet. As she does this Faith goes below her on the rafters. Kayla lands on a rafter and both her and Faith kick him at the same time knocking him back the way but he stays in the rafters. Where he meets Spike.
SPIKE
You’re outnumbered mate.
All three advance on him. They simultaneously attack him. He fends off as much as possible but he’s on a hiding to nothing. Spike grabs the axe out of his hand and moves back with it – The Apostle turns to him as Kayla throws Faith a sword and she takes The Apostles head clean off with it.
FAITH
Lucky bastard finally gets to meet his maker.
They all stare at each other – totally knackered but smiling.
CUT TO:
INT: Some Coffee Shop
The three of them sit at a table.
SPIKE
How’s your side?
FAITH
Sore. How’s your gonads?
SPIKE
Blackened.
KAYLA
I’m trying to eat here.
FAITH
Think it’s her turn to pay?
SPIKE
Oh yeah.
KAYLA
Seems unlikely to me.
The others smile.
KAYLA
So where you two headed now?
FAITH
I’m up for staying here for a while. (to Spike) You?
SPIKE
Well you know what they say about New York.
KAYLA
Say it and I’ll have to kill you.
SPIKE and FAITH (together)
It’s a hell of a town.
