Subject: Final promotion news before spring break

Well, the roster page is filling up nicely. With the addition of Peter's brother Andrew to our numbers, we've peaked at an even dozen. At present, the ranks list on the roster page shows that we have one officer (Steve) and nine lieutenants (everyone else aside from the guildmasters). Seems like it's about time for a promotion for someone.

However, given that the game isn't out yet, and also given that we're not even sure whether or not ranks are going to mean anything, I'm going to go ahead and freeze promotions, probably until the game comes out (Steve, you're a lucky man). If the ranks do mean something, then I'll want capable and motivated people in those positions. If I assign ranks by seniority alone, there's a very real risk that someone who doesn't want the responsibility could end up being promoted into it, and that's no fun for anybody.

I like Randy's idea of the round table idea, but the higher the membership gets, the harder it's going to be for me to keep up with everybody. That's why I want major decentralization in the form of underofficers who can handle things that I might not have time to. Kailef from Pay It Forward posted a story on their forum about how he was so busy running the guild that he didn't have time to play, and his character was way lower than everyone else's. I don't want that to be me. The guild is already highly decentralized in that nobody needs approval to go play; you just ask each other and when you get a group, you go into the game. However, making sure the time demands aren't too high on me is a prime concern, and capable underofficers would greatly ease me in running things. That's the main struggle I face.

So until we can reach a group consensus on that, I'm going to officially declare a hold to promotions. Feel free to continue the debate on the topic, and please pardon me if you feel I'm making too big a deal out of it.

Until next time,
Jim
