how can a driver have more points than the owner?

Owners get points just for attempting to qualify. driver's don't. So in theory,an owner should come out of a race with more points than the driver, no matter how the driver finishes. and yet Bobby Labonte is in 17th and Richard Petty is in 18th.
I don't get that one.

Kyle Petty the driver is in 38th because he missed 5 or 6 races but Kyle Petty the owner is in 34th because his car did not. so how can Bobby Labonte have more points than the King?
