Last week Rusty Wallace spoke about NASCARs apparent decision to leave long-time fans in the dust as they pursued newer younger fans. Even if you dont believe this is the case, you can see Wallaces point every time you tune into a Cup race. The pre-race festivities almost always include some rock or hip hop concert. Kelly Clarkson has been the front person for the NASCAR Foundation and they continuously bombard fans with outrageous personalities on the air such as the tattooed Ricky whats-his-name on Speed Channel.
Ignoring the country music fans was a pretty poor decision on NASCARs part because whether you like it or loath it, country music is ingrained into the very fabric of American stock car racing. In fact, if you talk to anyone who actually hates stock car racing, they will invariably link it to twangy cowboy music.
What people dont realize however is that it has nothing to do with the music. Its people. NASCAR isnt about music. It isnt even really about cars. NASCAR is people. Look, I have been to 56 Maple Leafs games. At Maple Leaf Gardens, people who sat in the grey seats never mingled with the people in the gold section. Why? Because you could buy a grey ticket if you were making minimum wage, but to sit in a gold seat you were either in the 60% incomes tax bracket or you knew someone who was. In the grey seats you wore a Leafs sweater, painted your face blue and white and after the game you went for a slice of pizza. In the gold section you wore a suit and went out for sushi after the game.
NASCAR is different. NASCAR fans dont care how much money you make. Trust me: I saw this last March at Bristol. In the campground we stayed at, you could see $90 pup tents right next to million-dollar motor homes. The guy pulling down three hundred grand a year could sit down on a folding chair and have a beer with a guy who makes eight bucks an hour serving fries at McDonalds. They wouldnt even give each other the time of day back home, but at a NASCAR race, only one thing matters and it aint money.
When I was at the Texas race, we were walking toward the front gate, me with my 45 hat on. A woman ran over, grabbed my arm and laughed, saying, There are two of us here! She too had a 45 hat on. Thats all that matters.
NASCAR, in their infinite wisdom just doesnt get it. Its not the music. Its not an age or sex thing. There is no logical demographic to it. Thats because NASCAR crosses all social and economic boundaries. NASCAR is a way of life. And the powers that be in Florida had better figure that out before they start to really lose fans.
We dont go to races or watch it on TV to see rock or country concerts. We watch it for the racing. I once saw a camper that had a big 8 stuck to his satellite dish. I looked at the guy and said, My God, something crapped on your satellite dish. Did he get mad? No. He laughed and offered me a beer.
On any given Sunday you can see 75,000 people at a football game. Twenty-one thousand at a hockey game. But not all of them are football or hockey fans. Guaranteed, some are there because the company got free tickets, or her boyfriend begged her to go or because hes sucking up to the boss. Its not that way at a NASCAR race. You go to one of those because youre a fan. Its not about music or anything else. A NASCAR track is the only place on earth where you can stick 100,000 totally different people into a square mile and find that everyone single one of them have one thing in common: Thats being a NASCAR fan.
Its not the music: its the racing. I hope NASCAR figures that out.

A cop sees two homeless men sitting on the sidewalk in front of a restaurant. Does he run them off? Nope. he parks his car across the street and phones the restaraunt.

"Listen, we have two undercover agents on a stakeout just outside your front door. We can't take them anything or we'll blow their cover. Can you send someone out with a couple of cups of coffee and sandwiches?"

Couple minutes later the cop sees the manager hand these two bums coffee and sandwihces.

Now that was a nicething for the cop to do, but what happens when the undercover cops never leave? The may get fed tomorrow and the next day but eventually someone is going to catch on.

Junior has much of a relationship with Taylor at all (right now) but that doesnt mean he doesnt love her and want to protect her. Junior was old enough to realize just how much that little baby meant to his daddy...her daddy.

Junior has turned into the man his father always envisioned, probably even more so.

In his showroom, Bodine is there, Rudd, Craven, Waltrip... they are all part of Hendrick history so they ought to be there. You know what this sounds like?

Richard Petty, a seven time Sprint Cup champion.

Petty never won a Sprint Cup in his life but nascar makes it sound like Winston never existed. Thats what DEI is sounding like now.

I just know Sr. would have been proud to display all the cars he had wins with, especially the cars his "boy" won in. A SAD situation all around. Who would have thought that Dales wife would be this petty and vindictive?

Yes indeed, I am absolutely sure he's right: Teresa and Max in no way meant to slight Junior. what a load of horseshit. Junior needs to start treating that company the way that company treats him. That, or just ignore them. Can you imagine this:

reporter: Junior what do you have to say about Teresa and Max removing all of your trophies and photos from the lobby at DEI?

Junior: Their actions speak volumes hu? I don't think I need to say any more than their actions already have. I did a Google and discovered that assholeness is contagious so I'm glad I went to Hendrick when I did.

Sr. Would have exhausted ALL OF DEI's resources to keep Jr at "home" but alas the evil stepmother has kicked Jr to the curb and wants nothing to do with a driver that helped build the company into what it is today. I know I am not alone when I say I think its only a matter of time before Charlie Sentman's auction company is at the Garage Majal because Teresa and Max have run both the legacy and dream of Dale Earnhardt into the ground. Stewart in no rush to sign contract extension: #20-Tony Stewart, who has spent his entire NASCAR Cup Series career at Joe Gibbs Racing, says he is in no rush to begin talks regarding a contract extension with the successful racing operation. "Right now I just want to get started with this year," Stewart said Tuesday. "I'm really not concerned about the end of '09 right now because we've still got to get through '08. Obviously, it's a topic with the team here, and they want to get it taken care of, but right now I want to see how the beginning of this year goes. Get halfway through the season before we even worry about talking about it again." Stewart's contract ends after the 2009 season. A change in manufacturer - the team will field Toyotas in 2008 after a long, successful stint with General Motors products - is of a more pressing concern to the 36-year-old Stewart. "There's nothing that has to be done right now anyway," he said of contract talks. "I'm here. It's about now to me; it's not about what's going to happen. Right now ... we've got a big change with a new manufacturer coming in, let's worry about running good and winning races and worry about the rest of it [later]." Stewart and crew chief Greg Zipadelli have been paired together since Stewart departed the open-wheel ranks to make the move to NASCAR.(in part from SceneDaily.com)(1-24-2008) Comment here

Bob, a handsome dude, walked into a sports bar around 9:58 PM.

He sat down next to a blonde at the bar and stared up at the TV.

The 10:00 PM news was coming on. The news crew was covering the
story of a man on a ledge of a large building preparing to jump.

The blonde looked at Bob and said, "Do you think he'll jump?"

Bob says, "You know, I bet he'll jump."

The blonde replied, "Well, I bet he won't."

Bob placed a $20 bill on the bar and said, "You're on!"

Just as the blonde placed her money on the bar, the guy on the
ledge did a swan dive off the building, falling to his death.

The blonde was very upset, but willingly handed her $20 to Bob, saying,
"Fair's fair. Here's your money."

Bob replied, "I can't take your money, I saw this earlier on the 5 PM news
and so I knew he would jump."

The blond replied, "I did too; but I didn't think he'd do it again."

Bob took the money......

It all has to do with what's called "Sports Entertainment", a catch-all phrase that originated with the McMahon family and the WWF. The phrase is kinda like a line of fine print that says we could be sports and/or entertainment, maybe both, maybe either. Probably kept the WWF out of court many times.

I have a hunch that bf is trying to mold Nascar the way that Mcmahon built wrestling. Concerts, fireworks, lots of hoopla, and huge ratings.

On paper, it all looks very do-able.

What bf missed, is that the average wrestling fan is a snot-nosed kid, and these kids get taken to the events by their parents who spend lotsa bucks for tickets, souveniers, etc. And these kids have short attention spans and are easily entertained.

When the "entertainment" becomes larger than the "sport" you're gonna be in trouble. Wrestling will be OK, it works for them, but it won't work for Nascar.

The sooner bf realizes this the better off we, the fan, and Nascar will be.

Yes, it started with the death of Dale, Sr.
And the death of Mr. France, senior.

Dale, Junior remains old school and has a respect for the sport.

bf seems to concentrate on entertainment. His Dad would be ashamed of him.

NASCAR never should have gone with the highest bid just because it meant more money. when nascar signed with nextel for 10 years I said nextel wouldn't even be in business in 10 years. and what do we have? nextel sold out to sprint.
anyone who seriously thought sprint was still gonna be around... or at least be able to afford this deal was out of their minds. do you know why they stopped sponsoring Kyle? Not because they weren't getting their money's worth. everyone agreed they were and that Kyle is the best pitchman for them. they had to drop Kyle because they could not justify laying off 8,000 employees and then keep giving Petty 10million a year.
Now what exactly makes them think they could keep up with sponsoring an entire series?

one more thing: written into the initial contract was this:
Nextel and its companies could change the name of the series ONE time during the ten year contract.

They've already done that.
nascar shoulda went with Coke. less money maybe, but Coke is still here.

If Kenny Wallace qualifies for the Daytona 500, and Nemechek doesn't, then Wallace has to give his car to Nemechek.

Its not the music JT. Rusty said it was country music but thats not really it. Its not the music: its the people who listen to that music.

NASCAR tried to lure new fans who, by coincidence, listen to a different kind of music. Why? I think the reason is pretty clear: the WW2 vets who started the sport are pretty much gone now. The Baby Boomers, who were the beer drinking country music fans who helped nascar grow up, are all approaching retirement. NASCAR tried to use rock music to lure the new age group who have a lot of money to spend now.
It isn't the music, its the fans. NASCAR gave up on the older fans in an effort to bring in new fans. Its pretty sad that they thought they couldn't have both. What nascar doesn't realize is that NASCAR is a language... a way of life.
I gotta do a story on this. I'm going to.
Look it comes down to this... when I was at Texas, I had my 45 ballcap on. As we were walking in a woman ran over, grabbed my arm and shouted "THERE ARE TWO OF US HERE!" she had one on too.
That's the point. You walk through the infield or even the parking lot. You could have a guy wearing a suit who makes 400grand a year ad if he's wearing a Tony Stewart hat, some fat guy in a torn t-shirt who makes 8 bucks an hour is gonna offer him a beer because they both have the same hat on.
France and Helton have to realize that it's not the music. They can have the baby boomers and the new generation because if you look out in the parking lot, the fans don't give a rat's ass what music they listen to, or what income bracket they're in.... if you get yourself popped in the nose, it's not because you are in a different tax bracket, or because you listen to country music r because your girlfriend is ugly. You're getting poppoed because
1: you're wearing a Kurt Busch hat
2: Kurt Busch just wrecked Dale Jr
and
3: you were dumb enough to walk between 8 guys who are all wearing dale junior hats.

NASCAR needs to realize that this is one sport where nothing matters EXCEPT the sport. If music means that much to nascar, then spread it around. bring in country. bring in rock.

or better yet, just stop having concerts. I guarantee, the seats will still be full because every single person in the grandtstands just spent two weeks salary to see a race, nt a concert.

Rusty is right: nascar needs to pull their collective heads out of their colelctive asses and take a look around.

NASCAR fans have one thing in common: NASCAR. the other stuff is just crap.

What all these...these nascrappers seem to be missing is that the "OLD", lost, fan, doesnt watch nascrap races for the entertainment...who gives a rats arce WHO sings the national anthem??? Who cares what musical group plays on the frontstretch before the race? Why do they think we care about that crap? Because THAT is, what it is, CRAP.

I go to the races to watch the races, the sounds, the smell, the HELLOOOO On track excitement??? Remember that? I have NEVER... EVER gone to the "concert" nascrap seems to think I need, to have a good time, at one of their events. WHY? Because I JUST DONT CARE. All I want for my money is to see cars battle for a win. And I mean BATTLE No "lucky dog" pass...

Well Nascrap is doing what it does so well, produces CRAP. The rule changes, the car changes...Shall I continue?

One thing Rusty does have right, it all started with Dales death. It was like his body wasnt cold before the wheels started turning in bf's head. All bf had to do was wait for his dad to pass the reins.

Go or Go Home Drivers to Qualify Together; NASCAR to Provide Tires for Tests: Michael Waltrip suggested last season that drivers outside the top 35 in owners' points should be allowed to qualify together so nobody would have an advantage in track conditions. NASCAR officials must have listened. The governing body kicked off its annual media tour by announcing that those outside the top 35 in all three series -- Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series and Craftsman Truck Series -- will qualify at the end of their respective session. It also was announced that teams will be provided tires for testing at non-sanctioned NASCAR tests. Sprint Cup teams will be given 200 tires, Nationwide teams 160 and Craftsman Truck Series teams 120.(ESPN.com)(1-21-2008)

Its quite obvious that bringing Joe Gibbs Racing into the Toyota camp was the smartest thing the Japanese auto maker could have done. Will it be enough to win them a championship in 2008? I seriously doubt it, although there are some writers who clearly think it will happen.
The Toyotas, led by Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart especially, seem very strong in pre-season testing. JGR has done a whole lot more in the last four or five months than former flagship team Michael Waltrip Racing did in almost two years. Its patently obvious that Waltrip was way over his head and that he promised a whole lot more than he could ever hope to deliver. It reminds me of that scene from the movie Top Gun where the commander says to Maverick, Son, your ego is writing checks your body cant cash. No one ever accused Michael Waltrip of not having an ego but this time it caught up to him and bit him where the sun dont shine. Despite assertions by Toyota that they were sticking with Waltrip, it was clear to everyone with a heartbeat that something needed to be done to stop the hemorrhaging at the track. In stepped JD Gibbs and look at what were seeing now.
When you take all of the test sessions into account, the fastest single laps by all of the drivers are very telling. Dale Earnhardt Jr. in his Chevy recorded the fastest lap at 185.820 on Day 5. But the next five fastest times are all Toyotas, with Blaney and Waltrip being second and third. But whats really important here is this fact: out of the top twenty fastest laps, Toyotas own 11. Chevy has four, Ford has three and Dodge has two.
In drafting things even out a little more but the Toyotas are still right on the money, with six cars in the top twenty.
What does this mean? Well to me it means that Toyota has 11 cars in the top 20 on single lap speed and six cars in the top 20 in drafting speed. Thats really about all it means. I dont think this means a whole lot because its testing and not racing. Testing is what it is.
Will Stewart, Hamlin and Busch be threats? Of course they will. Brian Vickers almost won a race or two last year and his car pretty much sucked for the most part. One thing you can be absolutely sure of: the cars coming out of Joe Gibbs Racing wont suck. I dont think they will set the world on fire. I dont think they will be good enough to make Tony Stewart happy. I dont think they will win the championship. Im not even sure they will win a race this year. But they most certainly wont suck.
That said its obvious the Toyotas have done some homework in the off-season. The sad part is they shouldnt have had too. A year ago I wrote in this column and elsewhere that it seemed to me that Toyota was somehow convinced that they were ready for Cup about a year before they actually were. That, in hindsight, seems to be about right. If this was the first time Toyota did a pre-season test at Daytona, then Jack Roush could say he was absolutely right to say we should all be worried about Toyota. That makes me wonder just how long some teams will, or even should, keep their factory support.
There have to be people at TRD scratching their heads and saying, what were we thinking? But its not really their fault: a good salesman could sell a glass of water to a drowning man and we all know there are some really good salesmen in NASCAR. If Toyota has really learned from this, than I would say two or three Camrys could be considered legitimate threats this year. Are they going to set the world on fire? I dont think so.

Todd I am absolutely sure they are all together.

Watching Court TV this morning... Wildest Police Videos... some dickhead in a Suburban was stopped for not wearing a seatbelt. Georgia I think. idiot runs for it. They set up a road block and he runs between them, wrecking a police car. Then he gets on a highway, running down the wrong side. a cop is on the bullhorn begging the guy to stop before he kills someone. He keeps going. Absolutely some of the most dangerous driving I have ever seen. I don't know how he wasn't killed or how he didn't kill someone else.
Finally they got a spike stick down and flattened his tires. He skidded into the median between the lanes. About a dozen ccops cars stop, surrounding him. First cop on the scene leaps out of his car, and leaves his door open. The dash cam from another car catches it. So that cop runs toward the truck with his gun out screaming for the guy to get out with his hands up.
Guy opens his door and starts to get out but his yellow lab leaps over him and runs toward the police and jumps in the cop car.

Now, I may be wrong but I think that guy's own dog just told him he was a dickhead.

Bubs and I are hanging out at Rainbow Bridge... waiting for the day...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

One year ago today I lost one of the lights of my life. Sometime during the night Our lil Bubs passed away. I stole this song and made a little tribute to Trouble from it. If Y'all dont mind I'd like to share it...

It was in Palm Desert back in '96
when I first brought you home.
A ball of fur, my love, you had won.
LONG MAY YOU RUN.

Long may you run, long may you run,
when all those changes had come.
With a cute little nose and those fuzzy toes,
long may you run.

S'been a year now since you've been gone,
the days are quick, the nights long.
My spirit's broken, it's just no fun.
Long may you run.

Long may you run..Long may you run,
when all the changes had come.
Your cute little nose and that funny pose.
Long may you run.

On the wings of angels, you left our home,
the pain I just cant describe.
I pray you rainbows and flowers to roam.
Long may you run.

Long may you run ...Long may you run,
once all the changes are done.
Your cute little nose and your fuzzy toes,
long may you run.

not entirely true. I bought them on ebay. item #320188711212
seller got my payment on December 7 and said he mailed it immediately. I'd like to point out that he charged $10 for shipping and I am sure a bunch of fiber optics would weigh almost nothing but thats besides the point. I wanted them so I paid it.
It has not arrived. The seller keeps saying he mailed them. Then he was sick and would go to the post office. Then the post office said the package was indeed deliverd to me (uninsured and with no tracking # according to him) so someone must have stolen it out of my mailbox.
Well now, how could they know it was delivered without a tracking number? And there are about 3 cars a day on my road including mine. Finally after a ton of emails, he said, and I freakin quote,
This is what I would like to do. Sense you seem very honest to me. I would like to send you another pack but sense I have no control over the mail once your package is in the hands of the post office I'll send you another pack at my expense if you purchase insurance for it. That way the post office will cover it if it doesn't get there. The US postal service charges $10.15 for their insurance. I'm sorry it's so high but that is their price not mine. unquote
First I emailed him a letter saying I wasn't too freakin happy about that little offer. Then a few minutes ago I go to the USPS website and checked their insurance rates. $1.35 to insure a package to Canada with a value under $50.

I just sent the guy another email sugegsting we get this settled because I have an email in which he just tried to defraud me out of money.

Actual letter to the Canadian Passport office
Dear Mr. Minister,
I'm in the process of renewing my passport, and still cannot believe
this.
How is it that Radio Shack has my address and telephone number and
knows that I bought a t.v. cable from them back in 1997, and yet, the
Federal Government is still asking me where I was born and on what date.
For Christ sakes, do you guys do this by hand?
My birth date you have on my social insurance card, and it is on
all the income tax forms I've filed for the past 30 years. It is on my
health insurance card, my driver's license, on the last eight goddamn
passports I've had, on all those stupid customs declaration forms I've
had to fill out before being allowed off the planes over the last 30
years, and all those insufferable census forms that are done at election
times.
Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother's
name is Maryanne, my father's name is Robert and I'd be absolutely
astounded if that ever changed between now and when I die!!!!!!
I apologize, Mr. Minister. I'm really pissed off this morning.
Between you an' me, I've had enough of this bullshit! You send the
application to my house, then you ask me for my address. What is going
on? You have a gang of Neanderthals assholes workin' there!
Look at my damn picture. Do I look like Bin Laden? I don't want to
dig up Yasser Arafat, for shit sakes. I just want to go and park my ass
on a sandy beach.
And would someone please tell me, why would you give a shit whether I
plan on visiting a farm in the next 15 days? If I ever got the urge to
do something weird to a chicken or a goat, believe you me, I'd sure as
hell not want to tell anyone!
Well, I have to go now, 'cause I have to go to the other end of the
city and get another copy of my birth certificate, to the tune of $60
!!!
Would it be so complicated to have all the services in the same spot
to assist in the issuance of a new passport the same day?? Nooooo,
that'd be too damn easy and maybe make sense. You'd rather have us
running all over the place like chickens with our heads cut off, then
find some asshole to confirm that it's really
me on the picture - you know, the one where we're not allowed to smile?!
Hey, you know why we can't smile? We're totally pissed off!

Signed - An Irate Canadian Citizen.

P.S. Remember what I said above about the picture and getting someone to
confirm that it's me? Well, my family has been in this country since
1776 when one of my forefathers took up arms against the
Americans. I have served in the military for something over 30 years and
have had security clearances up the yingyang.
I was aide de camp to the lieutenant governor of our province for ten
years and I have been doing volunteer work for the RCMP for about five
years.
However, I have to get someone 'important' to verify who I am - you
know, someone like my doctor WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN COMMUNIST
CHINA!!!

Rick,
Down here, you pay what you get duped into paying. And, the big kicker is that some insurance companies say "pay us every month, but in 5 years, if you make a claim, we'll drop you."

So, I could make payments in excess of $7000.00, but the minute I turn in a $5000.00 claim, I am done with them. Dropped for life.

Nice. Thanks for the calenders and return address stickers.

Insurance in my opinion is one of the biggest scams in the world.

Been with the same company for a few years. When we signed on with them, we took the monthly payment plan. They insure the house and car. Both have to be paid seperately though and I get a discount for having both thru them.

House is $118. per month... had to make a double payment the first month. The broker told me that 'in a couple of years with us, you won't have to do that." I was very surprised at the first renewal time that I had to make that double payment again.

The car is $80 per month.

I got another letter from them this mornign reminding me to come in and make that double payment so my insurance on the house wouldn't lapse. I called to make an appointment and then after hanging up I decided to make some calls.

Banks in Canada now sell insurance. I called a couple... not the bank I deal with though. The Royal Bank of Canada...

house: $49 per month. Make one double payment and then never again.
Car: $56 per month

exactly the same coverage on car and house as I am getting now.
My insurance company has been stealing $69 from me every single month. How in bloody hell can that be legal? If one insurance company can sell a policy for $49 how can another one sell the same policy for $118???????

Insurance companies in Canada made record profits last year. I can't figure out why.

part of the problem is that fr the most part, dogs suffer in silence. I'm glad the thing moved so they knew to do something about it.

It was awesome of that vet to do the work for free. Not many would. However, there is such a thing as payback and I think that because he did it for free, his business is about to pick up. That surgery will be paid for a hundred times over. Good publicity has a way of doing that.

More than anything, I'm glad that guy picked a man who is a good vet... and an even better person.

POLK COUNTY FLORIDA SHERIFF GRADY JUDD
Some "dirtbag" in Polk County Florida who got pulled over in a routine traffic stop ended up "executing" the deputy who stopped him. The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range.
Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed.
A statewide manhunt ensued.
The low-life was found hiding in a wooded area with his gun. SWAT team officers fired and hit the guy 68 times.
Now here's the kicker:
Naturally, the media asked why they shot him 68 times. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, told the Orlando Sentinel:
"That's all the bullets we had!"

Ok... I got an email last night from Rick macLeod. The government of Canada is outlawing the use of leaded fuel in racing. he sent me an email that was sent out by the president of the Canadian drag racers association.

Racers, it seems the sky is truly falling. The Government of Canada is planning to implement a total and permanent ban on the use of leaded fuels for competition purposes, effective January 1st, 2009.
If this happens, Professional Drag Racing in Canada is over. Immediately, completely and forever. This isnt the same as the challenges weve faced in the past. This time, theyre dropping the Big One.
No Pro Mod, No Pro Stock, No Top Fuel or Nitro Funny Car and no American competitors in any of our sportsman classes.

It goes on....

I replied....

Nobody likes racing more than me but....
nascar switched to unleaded fuel and their speeds and reliability haven't faultered at all... well except for Dale Earnhardt JR but I blame his stepmom and not gas.
If nascar engine builders can built 800 horsepower engines that can do 180 miles per hour for 500 miles on unleaded fuel, then building a 1000 horsepower car that can last 7 seconds ought to be a snap.
How can a ban on leaded fuel possibly impact Top Fuel and Funny Car, when they burn nitromethane? Nitromethane is produced specifically as a fuel for drag racing, it is the result of a chemical reaction between nitric acid and propane. Its already unleaded.
if its legal for planes to burn leaded fuel then I would like to see a court challenge... planes are off-road vehicles, right? so are race cars. Instead of whining, they need to find a lawyer who also owns a race car.

do this sometime... do a google of Clifford Olsen and see what the Government of Canada did with him... no, I'll tell you. he is the most prolific serial killer in Canadian history. all kids. once the bastard got caught, he made a deal. the government paid him something like $10,000 per body to tell where he his the kids. Olson's wife got the money. she justified taking it by saying Olson ruined her life too.
Canada hasn't executed anyone since 1965 but Olson brags about the fact that a member of parliment tried to get the death penalty reinstated for one day... to kill him. he still writes occassional letters to his victims families.

No I have never heard of Mr. Beck but if you recommend him for news, I'm SURE he's the best.

I think the plea bargain "They" give to these creeps that keeps them from the other side of the dirt, is to locate the body for the family.
I dont believe in it because it's a deterrent to the killers punishment. It's no wonder the death penalty is not a deterrent to murder.

BUT I dont know how I would feel if it were my baby sisters body that was missing. I would LIKE to believe that seeing my sisters killer dead, would free me from the anguish. but I just, in all honesty, dont know that it would.

Hey Glen. I have two comments. First I don't know why but the murder of Merideth Emerson is bothering me more than any other in a very long time. I want that guy dead. So my question is, since the powers that be were stupid enough to take the death penalty off the table... if they can prove he killed someone in Flordia, would Georgia be smart enough to drop the charges against him and send his sorry ass to Tallahassee where they actually do something about killers?
And second... this Marine who killed a fellow Marine... as if that's not bad enough... everyone is talking about hunting him down for the murder but no one is looking at something else.... if they can't find him, that means he has deserted.... isn't that in itself a death penalty offense in time of war?
Maybe we can geta twofer here. I'd throw the switch on either one of those bastards and I'd sleep well afterward.

the Wells Fargo one is awesome! But I can't use it!! all of the 45 cars in my shop are going to have to be Brawny. That makes moving to the new shop out of kilter but...

I own about 15 Brawny and 12 Cheerios Intrepids. if I could snag enough Wells fargo and Cheerios Chargers I'd do it but I got what I have for about $10 each. The absolute cheapest Wells Fargo I can find on ebay right now are $45 each and those are the cheapest versions and not the higher end stuff that I have. I'd much rather do Wells Fargo, just can't afford it.
So we gotta find me a Brawny coke machine Larry! :-)
I'm saving what you did though... who knows how it'll get used...

I got 500 feet of fiber optic cable. I can light up pretty much the entire shop with one or two small light bulbs... except for special stuff.

I have always planned to make at least one Coke machine. Game plan is to make the case out of a light wood or possibly the plastic you gave me Larry. I will make the front from clear plastic and glue a real Coke machine front panel to that and then put a small light bulb inside. The fiber optics I can run to each of the small lights by the selection buttons.
I can leave the Jarrett machine in the lunch room or something, since I probably won't have a show room. Although I have to say that I am re-thinking this. I have been collecting stuff for the shop for quite a while but have started setting up any walls. I had planned to do it as the Level Cross shop. Now I'm not so sure. Doing it as the new shop gives me an opportunity to try making things like CNC machines and maybe a 7 post shaker rig.....

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Jerry Freeze's voice reverberated through the walls of the showroom, once filled with the No. 88 and 38 show cars of Robert Yates Racing, now barren except for a Coke machine in the corner.

"Step into the other room where you can hear me without the echoes," Freeze, the team manager at Petty Enterprises, said last week.

Freeze has been coordinating the move of NASCAR's most storied organization from remote Level Cross, N.C., to the former RYR facility in Mooresville since the end of last season.

By the look of the showroom and main shop, little appeared to have been done a week ago. The cabinets painted in the familiar Petty Blue were bare. So were the mats where cars of Kyle Petty and Bobby Labonte will be assembled and set up.

[+] EnlargeCourtesy MCG Sports

Room at the inn: Petty Enterprises' new Mooresville shop offers 88,000 square feet of real estate.

Only a handful of employees were visible and most of them were in an adjacent room where the car bodies are hung.

Even the sign out front still read RYR until late Thursday afternoon.

But rest assured a lot has been accomplished over the last month and a half. Two large trailers make the 75-minute trip from Level Cross every day, hauling equipment from the shop in which team owner Richard Petty won 200 races and seven championships.

On Monday, all of Labonte's cars for the February opener at Daytona, as well as the personnel and equipment it took to build them, were in this 88,000-square-foot facility.

Kyle Petty's No. 45 team and cars arrived late this week after completing a Monday-Wednesday test at Daytona International Speedway.

By the end of the month Freeze hopes everything, down to a new cover for a Coke machine on which former RYR employees drew a mustache and beard on the face of Dale Jarrett after he bolted for Michael Waltrip Racing, will be in place.

"We could have moved and been ready to go on Dec. 15 with no problem," he said of the first available date after RYR moved its operation next to new partner Roush Fenway Racing a half-hour away.

"But the one thing Richard said through this whole move, and he hasn't given us a whole lot of marching orders, was he wanted all the Daytona cars built in Level Cross. He didn't want to move half-built cars."

[+] EnlargeAP Photo

Granddaddy Lee, left, and daddy Richard, right, help Kyle Petty celebrate his first race win in 1979.

The Level Cross shop was one of the last great links to the NASCAR of old. Opened in 1949 by Petty's father, Lee, the 65,000-square-foot facility was an odd mix of buildings connected to buildings with more twists and turns than the road courses at Watkins Glen and Sonoma combined.

Rooms were cramped and some ceilings were barely high enough for "King" Richard to walk while wearing his signature cowboy hat. As for the old building's fate, plans call for turning it into a shop to house the team's Nationwide Series operation.

"Level Cross was so disjointed," Freeze said as he looked around the spacious new building big enough to host Arena Football.

But the antiquated facility wasn't what made Petty uproot the family business that sits adjacent to the house in which he was raised to move to the heart of NASCAR. He still doesn't believe a big, shiny building will make a difference in how his cars perform.

What forced this split with tradition was the need to attract talented individuals who weren't willing to move to an area seemingly far from the civilized world, the need to keep sponsors from going to teams that offer the big, shiny buildings such as nearby Joe Gibbs Racing.

"We all seem to be chasing the same sponsors and employees," Freeze said. "Whoever we talked to they were off to talk to DEI or Gibbs or wherever. They would tour those places and then come to Level Cross and we'd be preaching the tradition and history.

"You're talking to some 35-year-old guy with an MBA that could care less how many races Richard Petty won. They would go through the Gibbs' showcase and we'd just look like backwoods guys."

Wanted: Best of the best
Freeze stood in the doorway across the hall from the shock room when a short, stocky man holding a rolled-up rsum approached him.

"Hunting a job?" Freeze asked.

"Yeah, I'm trying to get back in," the man replied.

Freeze smiled.

"That's the way it's been since I got here," he said. We've been bombarded with rsums and people coming through here. It seems like these people know when I walk through the door.

"In Level Cross, we couldn't get anybody with any credentials to pop in. It's blown me away that guys with 10 and 15 years in the sport have come in."

Many have come from RYR, which Freeze says kept only 30 of 150 employees when it moved to Concord, N.C., as part of its partnership with Roush. Many with jobs on existing teams have shown interest.

But what really blows Freeze away is the number of employees who stuck with Petty Enterprises despite the long drive, which has been made easier -- and less expensive with gas prices -- with a pair of vans purchased to form a car pool.

"Only about four have said they aren't coming," Freeze said. "I really haven't had the opportunity to bring on a lot of people. But to be in a modern facility, to help my job of bringing people in and upgrading the talent pool, this is what we needed."

Last holdout
The telephone in Freeze's office rang last week with an unexpected voice on the other end.

It was Kyle Petty, saying he'd made his first trip to check out the new facility he calls "Petty Enterprises West."

"That was encouraging for me," Freeze said.

It was encouraging because Petty had been against the move more than anybody, including his father, even though he was behind talks to build a new facility in Salisbury by 2009 or 2010.

"Not to say he was fighting it," Freeze said. "He just wasn't jumping up and down like Robbie Loomis [vice president of racing operations] and I were.

"It's funny. Richard, once he made his mind up to move, he wanted to get it done. Kyle was the one that was like, 'Hold on. Do we need to do it?' It was very odd the way Kyle's whole reaction to it was, but he's embracing it now."

Well, not totally.

"I have to admit I was a little bit more nostalgic about it, a little bit more resistant emotionally to turn loose," said Kyle, who felt the move should have happened eight to 10 years ago. "And I'm still not turned loose of it to be honest with you."

Petty can't help but look around Petty Enterprises and be reminded of the building his grandfather started building in 1947, or the addition that came in 1966 and 1970.

"And it's sad to think you're not going to go back there to work," he said. "It's like the house you grew up in, the house you raised your kids in. It's like going to your grandmother's house, your house, everything all rolled into one and now all of a sudden you're abandoning it and walking away."

That so few employees walked away when the move was announced eased Petty's anxiety.

"He believed there was going to be a big employee turnover, that there would be 30 or 40 people that decided they couldn't move," Freeze said of Kyle. "I knew he would make it over here at some point.

"But you know Kyle. He kind of walks to his own tune. That was his way. He was going to pop in when he was ready."

Never too old to change
Richie Barsz donned a pair of blue jean overalls, looking just as he has working all but one year at Petty Enterprises since 1970.

"The only complaint is I can't see daylight," the 65-year-old master fabricator said as he looked around the room with no windows.

[+] EnlargeCourtesy MCG Sports

Petty Enterprises hopes a state-of-the-art facility close to Charlotte will attract talented employees.

In Level Cross, Barsz worked in a small, somewhat dark room in the back of Petty Enterprises. The walls were covered with old signs, such as the original STP logo Richard ran under, which made it seem more like a museum than a work place.

Barsz had a window, too.

"It's different," he said of the new shop. "It's a change. But I'm 65. I'm ready for a change. The history we made at Level Cross, it's still there. You can't take it away. It's like the pyramids."

Barsz helped Richard Petty collect 126 of his 200 wins. He worked side by side with some of the best in the business, including former RYR owner Robert Yates when both were at Holman Moody Racing.

While he's not convinced Petty Enterprises had to move to recapture the glory it hasn't seen in decades, he does believe the change could help.

"I don't have a view of the big picture," Barsz said. "I just know that back when we did it we could beat anybody with 35 people and run two cars.

"But if management felt we needed a change, yeah, change."

Opening new doors
Freeze pulled out a mechanism that unlocked an electronic key pad to a side door.

"Didn't have that at Level Cross," he said with a smile. "Level Cross was as low security as it could get. Eight-hundred doors [a slight exaggeration]. It's impossible to get them all locked."

Freeze continued this tour to a back room big enough to hold two haulers. At Level Cross, the haulers parked outside the main shop. Drinks and food were stored in a back corner about as far from the entrance as possible, which made restocking somewhat of a chore for the crew.

Now they can wash, load and unload the hauler without being exposed to long walks or the elements.

"Our truck drivers are getting spoiled to death in this place," Freeze said.

There have been many other spoils. Yates left behind a lot of parts, pieces and equipment that the Pettys were able to buy or lease because Roush wouldn't purchase them. The trim on the walls is close enough to Petty Blue that a new paint job wasn't required.

But what Freeze and company most want is to restore the winning tradition that all the tradition in Level Cross couldn't create.

On that, Kyle is behind the move.

"We'd made our base stronger," he said. "We'd made our team stronger. But we needed to do something to create more excitement internally and externally. So moving says, if Richard Petty is willing to move this shop after 60 years, these guys are serious about what they're doing."

For Freeze, the move was a no-brainer. He and Loomis wasted little time convincing the Pettys that leaving Level Cross now instead of waiting to build in Salisbury was the right thing to do after Yates offered a three-year lease in October.

Only time, and wins, will tell.

"Our goal as of today is still to move to Salisbury," Freeze said. "Now when we get in here, if we enjoy it and it's paying off and we're growing -- and we've got more than enough room to expand -- we've got an option to buy the place.

"We all felt like we could do everything necessary to win out of Level Cross, but it's hard to convince the sponsors and talent that. By making the move into this building, it's going to help us in that regard so we don't look maybe as backwoodsy as we did."

this is a true story and one sentence that was spoken to me says it all loud and clear...

I have a story that can explain this...

In 1985 I went to the United States to open the first Tim Horton franchise in Tonawanda, New York. I was working down there for months... sneaking across the border because the idiot owner of the franchise said he was having trouble getting my work permit. One time I was crossing from canada into the states and the border guard ran my plate. he said, "How long have you been working for Tim Horton's?" I was surprised but I said, "About five years." He said, "No, I mean how long have you been working at Tim Horton's in Tonawanda?" I didn't even know they knew I was there. I told him I wasn't working there that I was working at Horton's in Hamilton, Ontario. "Yeah, why don't you park your car over there and come inside for a minute."

Inside I stumbled through it and then asked if I could call Horton's. The freaking owner shows up at the customs and immigration office wearing his white bakers uniform for God's sake. He says, "We're going to tell the truth about lying." I said, "Did you get this idea froma lawyer?" No. So the idiot tells the freaking JUSTICE DE#PARTMENT that we've been lying and sneaking me across the border for months but that my job was important to the livelyhood of about 2 dozen Americans..... Ok, now the head guy looks at me and says, "Son, I'm going to tell you a story.

"Back when I was working the booth out there, a Canadian... young guy with a girl in the car, comes to my booth. I said, whats your reaso for entering the United States? What possessed him to say it is beyond me but he says, "I'm going to shoot the president." I said, excuse me? He says, "I'm going to shoot the president." I asked why and he says because of what he's done to the Canadian economy. Now I know the guy was showing off but we brought him inside for a chat. We planned to give him shit then send him back to Canada but for some reason someone ran his name. Five years early it turns out he'd been arrested on a weapons charge in Alberta. The book says when the president's life is threatened, you call the Secret Service. The kid sat in a chair for three hours while the Secret Service came down from Albany. he spent four years in prison."
Then the guy leaned across the desk and looked me right in the eye and said, "YOU NEVER EVER LIE TO THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT."

Nuff said. Marion Jones didn't get taken away from her kids because she took steriods and cheated or even because she stole medals and endorsement money. she is going to prision because check fraud is illegal and lying to Congress is illegal.
these athletes need to grow up. Their real problems are they don't stay in school long enough to know whats right and wrong.
No athlete should be allowed to sign any contract or play a professional sport or recieve any money.. for playing or for endorsing products until they graduate from college.
I look at lebron james going to the NBA right out of high school and I'm thinking down the road something bad is gonna happen.

thos pills he had me on were making me sick and sleepy but were not doing anything for the headaches. They were absolutely terrible. I thought I was dying. When I saw the doctor I put the bottle on his desk and told him to stick them up his ass. He laughed and suggested I take them back to the pharmacy and have them destroy them properly. He gave me 2 pills... big wafer type things. They melt under the tongue. Took one yesterday and one today. They didn't help. Anyway, he ordered a CT scan. It'll probably be a week or so before that gets done. He gave me a prescription for something. I took it in today but haven't picked them up yet.
The headaches are absolutely terrible. He said they sound like migraines except migraines normally go away at some point. Mine don't. he said until yesterday he was pretty sure there was nothing growing inside. Now he's not so confident. I go back to see him Wed.

I really hope this goes away because on Monday Skip starts obedience, on Wed she starts agility and on Thursday she starts flyball.

The lab I used to work for charged 26.00 for a roll of 24. (no matter how many prints were printed)This is how the industry is forcing the public into going digital. The problem is the film development...

to develop film properly there HAS to be a certain volume of film, to support the chemistry.
companies that build film processors, build them for high volumes of film. (at LEAST 10 rolls a day). When labs run less than that volume of film daily, the developer in a sense collapses. This is PART of the "science" of the industry I was trying to tell you about. There is SO much more.

Now, there ARE developer mixes labs CAN use for low volume but for some reason they refuse to "change over". I talked myself blue in the face trying to convince the owner of the lab I worked for to change over but he would have none of it. He STILL processes film in BAD chemistry DAILY.

THAT is one of the reasons I quit. I REFUSE to ruin peoples film, then lie to them saying it must be "old" film they bought.( that and I called him a lying bastard to his face);) Or some other LAME excuse. I thank GOD everyday I dont have to do that anymore.

My prayers go out to all victims and family of these awful crimes. There but for the grace of God go I. I'm sorry for all the people involved in the searches, cause like you said...you want to find something, anything but you dont want to be the one that does. Bless you for trying Rick. I think God remembers acts like that, just as I'm sure, he remembers the perpetrators.

I don't know why but the kidnapping and apparent murder of georgia hiker Meredith Emmerson has been bothering me more than almost any other kidnapping. Maybe because this is a girl who knew how tod efend herself. I don't know. I do know this....

I want Gary Michael Hilton dead. Now. if it turns out eh's the wrong guy... sorry bout that. I just want someone dead now.

Years ago when I was running the donut shop we had a beautiful girl named Nina De Villiers come into the store a lot.
One day a man tried to cross into the United States from Canada. The US Border guards suspected he was hiding something and theys earched his car. They found a loaded gun. Unregistered. Why they did this is a mystery but instead of arresting him or turning him over to Canadian authorities, they sent him home... with his gun. Later that evening, he kidnapped Nina De Villier as she was jogging in a park.
Her disappearance hit me hard because the second I saw her photo in the paper I knew she was a regular customer. I immediately volunteered to help search. Hortons fed all of the searchers every day of the search.
Her dad came out and thanked us every day of the search. He wa sthe brain surgeon that operated on Wayne Gretzky's dad after his stroke so this crap can happen to anyone.
During the searches you're just sick to your stomach. You want to find something... anything... but you also pray to God you're not the guy who does.
In the end, they found her body in a ditch almost a hundred miles away from where we were searching.

That kidnapping really bothered me a lot. But this Meredith Emmerson kidnapping has too. I just want somebody dead. If Hilton is the wrong guy, well, we'll get to kill another one later.

probably just another day in the life.

hurts quite a bit though.
When I was a kid Mom had this plaque on the bathroom wall.... lets see if I remember it all

In life there are two only things to worry about
Either you are well or you are sick
If you are well there is nothing to worry about
If you're sick there are only two things to worry about
Either you get well or you die
If you get well there is nothing to worry about
If you die there are only two things to worry about
Either you go to Heaven or Hell
If you go to heaven there is nothing to worry about
If you go to hell you'll be so damn busy shaking hands with friends you won't have time to worry

for the last week or so I have been having terrible and very constant headaches. all on the right side and all start at the base of the skull. The pain does not go away. Last night was by far the worst. I had the dry heaves early in the evening. at 10pm I took 3 dramamine... 2 usually put me to sleep, and I followed them with a double dose of nyquil. at 2am I was still wide awake and my head was just throbbing. 2 more dramamine and more nyquil. I still haven't been to sleep. at 9am I called my doctor and said I needed to see him now. I got in at 10:30. I have taken probably 35 or 40 tylenol in thepast week. he checked my eyes and made me walk a straight line and stuff. Then he pressed on the base of my skull and I damn near hit him. he asked me if I wanted to try an experiment. sure. so he froze the back of my head. I could hear crunching. I said "Is the needle scraping against my skull?" he said, "That noise is the needle going inside the skull." So he froze it and left me there for a few minutes. He said if the pain stops, there's nothing growing inside my head. Five minutes later you could have cut my head with a razor blade and it wouldn't have hurt.... but the headache was still there. So he gave me a prescription for a narcotic. I forget what its called. And he made an appointment to see me again Wed. I took the first 2 pills about an hour ago.
they contain:
codiene
caffiene
aspirine
barbituate

I am about ready to fall asleep but the headache is still there. I probably have a golf ball in my head.

It just seems to go from bad to worse for some of the most storied teams in NASCAR. Last season it looked like Morgan-McClure may have been on the verge of turning things around after signing Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton and bringing in sponsor State Water Heaters. Granted a name like State Water Heaters doesnt resonate with the public like Kodak did, but at least it was a company willing to foot the bill to get a real race team back to the track. With a name like Burton on board things looked, well if not great, at least good.
Such is not to be the case. Right around Christmas Morgan-McClure was told State Water Heaters would be going to the 66 car driven by Scott Riggs. Well isnt that a Merry Christmas? Burton has also left the team. Now the team is scurrying around trying to find a driver and a sponsor. The ideal situation would be a driver that can bring money with him. Usually when that happens it turns out to be a driver that can only find a ride because he has money, and not because of incredible talent. But right now, the 4 team needs money if they intend to compete.
If they can secure sponsorship, there is a chance they can hook up with another multi-car team so share technical information. That would be ideal but it hinges on money. Morgan-McClure will certainly be at Daytona: everyone with a car will be there. But beyond that, its all up to money.
A lot of newer fans wont realize just how good the 4 car used to be. Its like the 43 and the 21 cars. New fans dont know how it used to be unless they watch old videotapes. Its a shame to see those cars fall by the wayside. Maybe the 43 is starting to turn things around a little bit but for the 21 and the 4 car, its maybe not so good.
These teams deserve better than theyre getting. It was sad last year to see the legendary Wood Brothers pull their driver out of the car and replace him with someone who could do no more than guarantee six starting spots. Thats what its come down to and it isnt right.
Its all big business now. Lowes, Dupont and McDonalds are not interested in being on the side of cars driven by Mike Skinner, Ricky Craven or Andy Houston, but you know what? At one time, they all were on the cars driven by those guys. Nowadays its all flash: the so-called young guns. If you cant put a good looking kid on television every week, well find someone who can. Thats what its all about now and because of that, the history of our sport is starting to disappear.
Thats what Morgan-McClure is, you know: history. Just as surely as the names Petty, Earnhardt and Wood are pieces of NASCAR history, so is Morgan-McClure.
I spent some time at Morgan Shepherds race shop a couple of years ago. What a sad state that was. He had one complete car in the shop. The day I got there Shepherd met me for lunch. He was just getting home with a new Arrington engine in his trailer, and yes, he was bringing it home himself. The shop was a far cry from the squeaky-clean shops Id visited at Hendrick, Petty and BDR. The walls were just sheet metal and it was noisy. But there was this shelf, up near the ceiling, and sitting on it were all these trophies.
Thats what Morgan Shepherd was reduced to: a bunch of trophies on one shelf in an old metal building that housed one used race car. But think about it for a second. There were trophies. Todays race fans have no idea how good Morgan Shepherd was.
No, Morgan-McClure, the Wood Brothers and Morgan Shepherd do no deserve special treatment. But they do deserve I dont know something. Even if its just a little respect.

makes me wonder just how much authority the coach kept for himself.

and more importantly, I wonder if JD realized that he will probably lose Stewart because of this.

Stewart said he is waiting till the season starts before negotiating a contract extension but I think he's waiting to see how good the cars are. You can bet your sweet ass that if half the Toyotas miss the 500, he will put negotiations on hold again.

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1907. One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1907:

The average life expectancy was 47 years.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
The average wage in 1907 was 22 cents per hour.
The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.
Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard.
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from Entering into their country for any reason.
Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadnt been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." (Shocking? DUH! )
Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE! U.S.A.!

One thing I will say, that kid was pretty damn smooth wasn't he? and he did it ramp to dirt instead of ramp to ramp. Thats a bit safer I think. Knievel might have made ceasar's palace if he'd done that. But Evel's jump at Ceasar's Palace was a lot more exciting than his son's was.

If you DO decide to go that route. Check out a local high school night class... Not that you cant do it on your own, I have faith in you, but there are a few finesse things you can learn that will make it SO much easier.

I purchased all the enlargers I used to work with from AC for $150.00 . thats 3 4X5 Omegas with turret lens holders AND individual lens plates. and full spectrum of enlarger lenses for EACH enlarger. All have two light mixing boxes. They can also be used for B&W printing, All this equipment was ONCE worth thousands of dollars. I paid 150.00. THATS what digital has done to this industry.

But there is NOTHING like winding a roll of film on a reel, in complete darkness, processing it,then seeing the results right before your eyes. I recommend it to anyone who loves cameras and pictures. GO FOR IT!

Wish I had my lab book. Cant remember the best developer for that type film. Maybe David can recall.

Any lab that develops B&W film "in house" *should* be able to do it. In B&W there are many types of developers that properly develop different film types.

If you cant find an "on premises" lab, a good lab should be able to send it out for you. Be prepared to pay. I would imagine it costing anywhere from 4.00 to 10.00 a roll. That's for develop only. If you have it printed there *may* be a break on the developing.

Your best bet is to take a class and learn how to do it yourself. It's a dying art. An art I LOVE but...

From the first time I tried,I could load a roll onto a reel. Perfectly I might add.

Processing your own B&W is easier than you might think.

I have some small 45s that I may put on it but there will be no 43 on it. Kyle's the focus of Petty Enterprises North.
Besides, with the monster engine, its not an exact duplicate of the real one so I don't need to put numbers on it.

In the last few days I have bought some stuff for both the 35mm and digital cameras....

Cokin makes some nice filters for small digitals... the filter holder screws into the tripod mount and the filters slide into it directly in front of the lens. I bought a mount and 5 or 6 filters for it.
Also bought some filters for the 35...
center focus fog
soft focus
6 point rotating star

I want to try taking real photos of people and animals. I took some really nice ones of the deer in the yard. Got a good one of a doe and little one and had it blown up to 2 feet by 3 feet for Mom for Christmas.
I got a $50 gft card to Amazon so I bought 2 decent photography books with it.

when Kim & I went to the Richard Petty Museum a couple of years ago, she talked me into sitting in a bumper car. Someone had painted it and given it to the King and he has it on display. Not sure if they actually allow people to sit in it but I did.

George has kindly painted a bumper car for my 1/24 scale race shop and he gave it to me for Christmas. No, I cannot sit in this one....

Thanks again George. Its pretty cool. I have an 18" tall stand-up of Kyle. I am going to reduce it in size so it will be life-size in 1/24 scale. In the main office at PE there is a stand up of Richard. I will put Kyle there and I'll put the bumper car there I think.

on another note.... on Christmas Eve we lost our hot water. Nothing would get it going.. its a new hot water heater. On Christmas Day I thought, hey, there is a fuse panel for that thing in the basement. I went down and checked. One of the 2 fuses had not only blown, it had blown apart. The metal peice that makes the connection has broken off and stuck to the panel. The fuse itself was burned black.
This morning I went out and bought a new fuse panel. I shut the power off at the main breaker. Now I am going down to change the panel myself. If you don't hear from me again, its because this didn't work out well.
