Taim is supposed to be aware that Rand has a number of asha'man that accompanied him to a lot of places, and acted as Rand's guard of honour. I think that Taim would have know that Rand could use a guard in a situation that was bound to draw the attention of every channeler in the whole world, so I do no believe for one moment that Taim would have been surprised to see an old man, looking remarkably like his old student Damer Flinn, was patrolling the woods.

If you want to make this believable, then explain why Taim would not have expected Rand to have any backup at all. Demandred might have dismissed an old man like that, but Taimandred had no reason for such a mistake.
