Too true. The ebony 'ness had kept having children and had kept adopting them, but she had never been there for them. In all reasonable rights Rose should have hated her as much as Hazel did, but she didn't. Perhaps it was because the young 'ness understood something about her mother that led her to persist in loving her even though she had been gone and doing other things for so long. In many respects, it was healthier for the graceful ebony-gold as she harbored no anger, no regret, and no hatred for the one who was her mother by blood.

Her father was a different story.

But then, he had always been a different story, and always would be. What she knew to be more important was her mother, and that of her relationships with her children- all of them. And so, the 'ness soon changed the direction of her gaze yet again, its piercing contains directed towards her mother with a thoughtful air.
