Technologies that automate are machines that perform a task without human interaction. Technologies that infomate collect information about the person using them to make an informed decision as to how it should respond.

Say you are paying your bills online. You put in all your credit card information and the computer does the rest. This is an example of automating. However, if you should get a message from your computer saying that your credit card balance is too low, this is an example of infomating.

Automating provides no direct feedback to the user, while infomating does.
