What I found interesting is how far companies are going to protect 'intellectual propery'. I found it absurd that people wanted to limit what can be accessed via the Internet. Someone is quoted on saying that unless we find a way to protect information on the Internet, there will be no information worth accessing in the future. A few months back I have agreed with this, but now I know this to be untrue. I recently found out that only about 33% of all web sites out there are linked to popular search engines out there. I also learned that there is such a thing as the 'deeper web' where academic information is categorized and housed by companies. These companies (like Lexis/Nexis) sell this service to schools and institutions that are willing to pay the money. This is a form of protecting copyrighted information. I'm sure some of those fees are used for copyright royalties.
