I don't think Giant and Safeway are out to get us like that. I think by tracking our purchaces it is simply giving them feedback about what products we buy and how often we purchase them. By tracking our purchases they give us coupons on intems we buy often which is an incentive for us to come back to that particular store.
It's sort of like a survey for their company. They need to know what items consumers are buying and how much of a product to order and keep in stock. This helps the stores stock their shelves which keeps us, the consumers, happy.
