Many of us who have gone abroad or have moved to other places in the Philippines are probably homesick and eager to know what is happening in our town and to our friends and relatives in Tagudin and elsewhere so for this in mind, I've created this message board for I thought that this would be a great medium in bringing us together and in getting us reacquainted and closer to our hometown of Tagudin.     - Ok guys let's do it altogether. Gently tuck in your belly and inhale slowly, rolling your shoulders forward and up. Exhale slowly, rolling your shoulders backwards and relaxing them down. Do this three times in a continuous motion. Imagine your energy floating up your spine, through your neck and to the crown of your head as you inhale, and then back down as you exhale. I am sorry if I have disappointed you. The truth is I have not published a lot of messages coming from many different people including certain relatives because of the content of their messages. If I allow these kinds of messages there would be chaos and altercations and this is not what this message board is all about. I also do not approve messages with author names that are fake especially if the contents of the messages are not acceptable. This is easy for me to tell because of their ip addresses. One example is the messages with different names coming from the same ip address from the same computer. As an advice, be careful when you post because every time you log into a website or send an email your trace is recorded. Your ip address could tell what your provider is and other info. If somebody is serious enough to file a lawsuit against you, a court can easily obtain a record from your internet provider with those records. In regards to what you said about Nomencia's messages, she uses her real name and I believe her posts are acceptable. If you want you are welcome to express yourself the way she expresses herself here in this mb just as long as you identify yourself properly with no fake names and don�t go over the limit with your messages. Many of the messages that I didn�t approve went over the limit and they meant to put down other people and to ruin people�s good reputations and some were indecent. You could also directly let her know how you feel by sending her an email since her email address is already well published in this mb. As I have said from the very start of this mb, everybody is welcome. Lastly, if you have any dispute or dislikes against other people, this is not the right place to settle your affair. Please do it outside this board for this board is a meeting place for all of us not just for two or three people and for the sake of friendship and unity.

- These pictures might not even be in the late 50's but in the 40's. I can't even recognize any of the nuns except the two lady teachers at the middle picture. The teacher at the left was the late Miss Socorro Dacio, my ninang & at the right was the late Mrs. Nena Lardizabal Agas, sister of the late Maestra Moning Lardizabal from TPHS. - Holy Smokes! Thank you for sharing these vintage pictures Elena and for pointing out Ms. Rosing Ulpindo in that last picture. These pictures were probably taken around 1947-48. I'm afraid Lakay Aloy is right... I was still attending Ms. Socorro Somera's kindergarten class at the time. I can recognize Mr. Agripin (pic #2) our High School horticulture teacher seated beside Ms. Dacio. Only one of the nuns look vaguely familiar, the one on the right, though I can't remember her name. These pictures were most probably taken before Mother Ambrose' tenure as Mother Superior. All the ladies look beautiful though and the young men good looking! Jose Dacio, Tang Berto Lamorena, Atty Samson, Tang Andring Lim - whether it was at the cockfights, at poker, or billiards - yes they all came to our house in Farola at one time or another. I remember Nang Felicing your Mom, always with that sunshiny personality that complemented her good looks, always smartly dressed, her hair nicely coiffed - with you guys in tow. I remember borrowing your older brother Lito's "Classics" comic books courtesy of Raymond my younger brother. I remember your uncle Tang Abelardo coming to my Grandmother's store for a sip of basi. Tagudin On The March

For me this most recent visit to Tagudin has been an eye-opener on many fronts. First and foremost I saw our hometown of Tagudin on the march. There seems to be no stopping now; the wheel of progress is turning at close to "warp" speed.

I had many opportunities to walk the "paved" streets, to view and admire the many new businesses and concretized homes sprouting all throughout the neighborhoods and to lament over some of the more familiar landmarks displaced by newer edifices and facades. Thank God the acacia trees in the plaza are still standing - else I wouldn't have recognized the old SAS compound.

Yet as in any ground swell of progress, there are still some sectors of the overall economy left glaringly lagging behind. Take education for instance. Not that education is not being delivered, mind you. It's the class to teacher ratio (for one) and the lack of classrooms (for another). Imagine 74 students in one class! I saw it with my own eyes over at Tagudin High School. Young people packed in a small room, some standing, some sitting by the seat of their pants on window ledges. It occurred to me... how can these students grasp concepts, assimilate information and become more educated in an environment that is not conducive to learning? I spoke with several of the teachers and the school principal. They expressed the same sentiments... not enough allocations for items.

But this is the future of our town! These young folks are the ones who will continue to bear the torch for Tagudin and usher in the next generation. What can we do? What are we to do?

Over at SAS the situation is a little better and the quality of education more sustainable. What would happen if we encouraged some of the young people attending Tagudin High School to attend SAS instead? This would alleviate some of their overcrowding problems. Upon further investigation it wasn't that the young people attending Tagudin High School did not want to attend SAS. In fact they would readily attend SAS - if only they could afford it. Pursuing the matter further, I found out that it takes P7,000 per student per year to attend SAS.

What if we extended our help to our children there in Tagudin so they could get a decent education? Yes - in the form of scholarships offered at the Barangay level? Look, we are lending a helping hand to the Southeast tsunami victims - here we have our own children in Tagudin trying to survive a tsunami of an educational system that has been relegated to last priority by the Philippine government. P7,000 pesos a year! That's approximately $137 dollars a year per student. We can easily spend more for one evening of fine dining at any restaurant in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Dallas, Honolulu, Rome, London, Canberra, Toronto, Vancouver - or wherever Tagudinians abroad live and play. Our American born children can easily spend more on DVD's, CD burners, cellphones, digital cameras, MP3 gadgets... Why don't we help our children in Tagudin achieve their dreams...

There are currently 43 Barangays. We can start by offering one scholarship per Barangay as a pilot program and see how it is managed. I recommend that we submit all contributions to the Mother Superior of SAS so she can manage the scholarship offerings for our deserving young students. And yes, students will compete for these scholarships and be recommended by their teachers and other officials.

It is time for all of us to come to the aid and support of our young, talented and gifted children, who, through no fault of their own do not have the financial means to get a good, solid secondary education. This is the future of our beloved Tagudin.

We ought to invest in our hometown's most important asset - our young people! Please consider this proposal. This is NOT a solicitation. Thank you and I hope to hear your ideas.

If we have scholarship to encorage students to go to SAS then we are just transfering the problem from one place to another.   - Manong Tom's proposal is great but also I agree with what you said Auntie Nomen that it doesn't need to be the veledictorians or salutatorians who can have these financial aids for we have kids back home who badly want to finish at least their high school but just can't because of financial hardships. I think another way we could help is for us to encourage people to open up more businesses in Tagudin so that there will be employment and this way people might be able to afford to have their kids go to school. My real name is Plaridel. I could say it is unique because not too many people have this name in the United States. It might be a little more common in the Philippines but I think even back home very few people have this name. I used to hate it because it is unusual, long, and most of all, many people have a hard time saying it. I have wished that my parents should had just named me Larry which is the name that people use to call me since it is shorter and easier to say but as I get older I�ve learned to love and embrace my real name for I realized that this is the name that my parents chose for me when I was baptized as a baby many moons ago. I�ve thought of changing it before especially when I changed citizenship but I am glad that I didn't for it is truly a unique name catered just for me and it is the name that I am used to since almost birth, and I also do not want to disrespect my parents� name choice which probably took them a lot of time and thinking to come up with such a name for me. Most Filipinos know that Marcelo H. Del Pilar (one of the national heroes of the Philippines) used Plaridel as his pen-name. There are also a few towns in the Philippines named after the pen-name of Marcelo H. Del Pilar, and the most famous one is Plaridel, Bulacan but in my case I was not named after the national hero del Pilar but I was named after a good friend that my mother had before she married my father. Her name was Pilar. My mom and Pilar were best friends and roommates for many years when they were assigned to teach in the mountain provinces in the Philippines. When my dad who is from Candon, Ilocos Sur got assigned to the mountain provinces to work as a district engineer or engineer for the dept. of public highways, she met my mother and I guess they fell in love and eventually my mother left Pilar to be with my father, and this was very devastating to Pilar or Larry as their friends used to call her because my mother was her only family in those cold and lonely mountain areas and she and my mother were together for many years. So when my mom gave birth to me as her first baby boy, both of my parents decided to name me Plaridel in honor of their friend Pilar. Now I am treasuring my name even more because of the story and the people behind it. Pilar passed away several years ago in the Mt. Province. May you rest in peace Auntie Pilar. I love you and I�m sorry that I didn�t get to see you before you left us in this world. These days my parents who are both retired and in their seventies are managing Seaside Park so just to keep them busy in their senior years. I would like to thank my mother for telling me the story on how I got my name.

        Sigurado nga agaammo da. This is great and it is nice to get to know you too. I would mention all these when I call mom in PI. My two older sisters also went to SLU and even myself got a chance to go to school there for part of my high school (SLU Boys High) because of dad. He taught in SLU for awhile and before he left for the states he was the dean of civil engr dept in SLU. Tang Pedro passed away from on December 23 in New York City. He is the father of Jovita, Remy, and Arthur Valdez. He is from Del Pila District. May his soul rest in Peace. Amen.

Photos such as this do juggle the memory. It's all coming back to me now. My youth saw groups of men and women, the likes of which included Mayor Badong Valdez, Tang Pik Mina, Tang Imong & Nang Felicing Valencia, Dr. Galvez & Nang Merced, Mayor Jose Bunoan, Atty. I am sorry that I have to disapprove some of the messages lately because of the nature of their contents.

It is now getting harder for me to moderate this board but you could help me make this board as clean and orderly as possible if you would abide by the rules when posting. This is also to make this board more useful and enjoyable for all of us.

1.) Please use your own name when posting. Don't use other people's name. You don't have anything to hide here. We are one big family. Aliases are permitted only if the contents of your messages are acceptable to all the readers or if they meant to facilitate good discussions but I would still prefer you to use your real name so we know who you are and where the posts are coming from.

2.) Absolutely no offensive messages or messages with double meanings that are meant to offend. Be careful and think on what you are going to post for it might be ok to you but might be interpreted by others as offensive. If you have a grudge against anybody please settle it outside this board.

3.) All Messages should have contents suited for the general public. Absolutely no obscene/indecent messages are allowed. Remember that this board is visited by people from all ages and walks of life.

Before we all get too busy with the Seasonal celebrations and activities... Hello Everyone!
November's last gasp has come with a slightly nervous breeze blowing across the Gulf of Mexico. "Thank God it's not another hurricane," that's what I hear the locals saying. Here, in the sunshiny state of Florida, the self-ordained "Oracles of the Airwaves" incessantly spew out optimistic pronouncements, "The hurricane season is over," complete with the subliminal and unspoken message of "now go shopping," at the trailing end of each broadcast. With that forthcoming message of hope the Malls explode with frenzied shoppers.

People from all walks of life come out of the woodwork some looking like they have just awakened from extended hibernation. Those able to walk and even those requiring the assistance of mechanical transporters replete with strange looking contraptions crowd the mega bazaars and neatly decorated little boutiques. Shoppers claw and sift hungrily at heaps and stacks of merchandize (undoubtedly manufactured in Sri-Lanka or thereabouts) looking for that bargain price tag or that elusive 50% off red tag discount label. To be sure, there will be a tidal wave of gift giving before too long and the hectic schedules that go with it.

We stand on the threshold of yet another Christmas. We are in the cusp of the merriest time of the year. Setting aside for a moment all important social activities, obligations and other mundane machinations, may I suggest that we take time to reflect on the meaning of the season. We can begin by looking at how attentive, or how neglectful we have been to the needs of others, for example, to the needs of the members of our own families - our spouse, children, parents, grandparents, relatives. How could we have done a better job at showing them we care? We take example from the "Reason for the Season," our Lord who is born this day for us, so we can live abundantly and so that our joy may be full.

In wishing you, all my Ka-ka-ilians, fellow Tagudinians the world over - a happy and blessed Christmas, may your families, hearts and homes be filled with Christmas peace and joy, joy that lasts and peace as only our Lord can give!
