Looking over some of those old papers (The weekly NEWBURGH TELEGRAM, the NEWBURGH JOURNAL and The NEWBURGH DAILY NEWS) from the first quarter of the 20th Century (at the online Google Newspaper Archives site) is a fascinating experience, particularly if you had local ancestors who were being born, living, marrying, giving birth, celebrating anniversaries and expiring, away back then.
